How much room for negotiation on a used 2003 M3 convertible?
Hey Guys,
My girlfriend is looking at used cars, and we are going to check out a 2003 M3 Convertible this weekend. The car is pretty much loaded with a manual transmission. It has 25k miles on it, and the dealer is asking for $26k. What price should we start our negotiations at? KBB.com has the following values. I assume this car is not in "Excellent" condition though, since it's a 2003: Suggested Retail Price (only shows excellent): Excellent: $27,725 Private Party: Excellent: $24,425 Good: $23,175 Trade In: Excellent: $21,450 Good (probably what the dealer paid): $20,400 Thanks BTW, I know this is the "New" M3 purchasing forum, but I have no idea where the Used forum is

Ok, since no one's responded, let me rephrase my question. I assume the dealer paid the "Good" Trade-In value when they bought the car, so they probably paid around $20.5k. They are asking for $26k. Would it be too low to try to start negotiations at $22k with the intent of ending up around $23k?

$22K would not be a bad starting place. Cars across the country, new or used, have declined in sales recently and the fact is dealers want to get rid of their cars. You could even start lower and if they laugh at you, then ask them to call you back in a month when the car is still sitting there. Worked with my friend who got a fully loaded new e92 m3 for $52K!

I think I'll start at 22k and go from there. The sales guy is cool, and I don't want to mess with him too much. Hell, he let us drive an 03 911 last time we were there!

So we went in to check out the car this weekend, and the dealer was only willing to lower the price of the car by $500 . I told them I'd be willing to pay $23-24k since they probably paid $20-21k for it, and the manager literally told me "We're not St. Vincent DePaul. We're a for profit organization". So we just told them we were not interested and left.
