1st Oil Change

Is it necessary to change the motor oil in the 1st 1200 miles?

Thanks.

That depends on how you drive it. The car will let you know when it needs service...and it actually displays the miles until next oil change on the instrument cluster display briefly upon startup.

The car will let you know when something needs to be taken care of.

Necessary? No.

There are two schools of thought. One is to follow the manual. Clearly the engine will make it past 100k this way.

The other is to cut the interval in half, doing an oil change in between the ones the CBS calls for. Often people in this second camp also do a very early oil change at the 1500/2000 mile mark from new.

Welcome to the Oil Wars.

I bought my car, not lease, so there's no way I'm waiting until 15,000 miles for the first oil change, especially with the 335i being a turbo car. I changed my oil at 1,200 miles and as expected, the oil was pitch black...just like my Evo was at around the same mileage.

I change the oil every 5k and get the 15k and 30k freebies from the dealership.

Only for M3 but it is up to you to change it every 7.5K miles specially for a turbo engine.
