Question regarding headrest

I was at the dealership yesterday and found that all of the floor displays have the new headrest with forward and backward adjustments. I refer to them as "new" because I've never seen them before. Can anyone tell me if this is a standard thing that BMW is now offering? The only model that didn't have this new headrest was the 1-Series.

This is what I am talking about.

These are so called active headrests, which will tilt forward in case of an accident, to protect the neck. The headrests are supposed to be difficult to take out, which makes them incompatible with most existing seat covers.

apparently that they were on E93 since the start of production year for MY09, but it looks like they just starting to put those on E92 and E90/91 recently.

That is interesting. I'd get that checked. Active headrests are standard on the 3 series for the 09 MY.

They did the same thing with the '06 cars. As of 03/06 production they received revised head rests as whip lash ratings were so crappy with the original design.

Mine is a 10/08 build and I don't have that either.

However, the manual says it does. I have to recheck my invoice and see what it says was on my order.

It is VERY annoying how BMW does these in production changes without anyone knowing. e.g. like the big hole in place of the ashtray lid.

Active head restraints are a feature I would have wanted -- I can live without it but IT IS VERY ANNOYING how they intro these changes.

My brother has a Mini and so does his buddy -- both the same model year and they can pick out difference when they open up both cars -- and they are only 3 months apart. Each wishing one feature or the other was in their car.

I am not sure how they can get away with truth in advertisment when the catalog show one thing and the car of that model year has something completely different

I agree completely. With BMW it seems quite routine that they perform mid-year changes all the time, especially with the 3-series. Look at the '07 cars, as of March '07 production, iDrive equipped cars received the row of softkeys on the dash.

mine is 11/08, and my headrest sure doesn't look like the pics in the OP's post.

however, the headrests on my car do look different from the earlier models with sport seats. sports have two strips of stitching running down the front face of the headrest while MY09 pre-march production just have a blank leather surface.

Pre-MY09

MY09-Pre March Production
