Question What is BMW thinking of with exhaust design!?

Hi guys,

I don’t know if I am the only one thinking like that or there is who sharing me the same thinking, but don't you people feel that BMW have a problem with the dual side exhausts?

We can see that most of the cars makers are designing their cars with dual side exhausts such as Benz and Lexus, even Hyundai but not BMW!

The E38 had a very nice dual side exhausts system, but not with the current 7er!

Now BMW is doing the biggest mistake when they are adding the dual side exhausts in the 335i only and not with the other engines of the 3er!

What about the 5er, X3, 1er, Z4...etc? It’s will be a long list!

The same problem with the LED lights, it was integrated in the E46 coupe but not in the E92!

All makers are going forward with their designing ideas and BMW going backwards!

What BMW is thinking of? Can some one tell me please?

I actually prefer the twin pipes on the 330 to the split ones on the 335. Splits look great when there are 4 pipes, though

What do you mean by dual side exhaust? sounds like two on one side to me, but I think you mean split pipes, one on each side.

Yeh, I think the split pipes on the 335i look naff. they just don't sit right with the rear end look.

Two on one side or split 4 is the way forward!!

I think its will be more modifiable when it is will be split, at that time you can make it one or two pipes in each side!. With the current design it is unable to do it!

Imagine that you will be able to install the M3 kit in your 320 simply! Such as Mercedes Benz!

i kind of agree with Zadjali about the dual side pipes. i prefer the 335i look a lot better but the M3 quads are definitely the shit.

It should be very easy to mod the rear of the 335 to have quad pipes. Purely aesthetic of course, but whatever.

it's a straight 6, not a V6

the exhaust all comes out of the same side of the engine block, and really should all flow out the same side of the bumper too

dual exhaust is just for looks, and adds no performance in a straight engine

are you about looks or performance

Both!

It is easy to split it! Especially without spare tyre in the new BMWs. Thanks for the Run-Flat tyres! In addition, it will help more in weight balancing.

Help more in weight balancing? How do you figure? Are you talking about left to right balance due to having exhaust outlets on both sides of the car? The difference would have to be minimal at best.

I thought it was better on the left, to counter the battery being on the right

Hah! my though too!

IMO the 335i pipes are a little too close together, the don't add to the perception of vehicle width/bulk like the S4 or Lexus pictures above.

on the exhaust... is it really detrimental to have the exhaust split?

Q1: is the exhaust leaving the I6 via 1 pipe or two?
Q2: Would it matter performance wise if the backpressure / flow through was identical to a dual or single right or left?

Its not detrimental. I'm sure they wouldn't do it if it made the performance suffer.

There is probably a reason behind it like they needed a certain silencer/muffler volume which wasn't possible to fit all on one side of the sunken trunk floor.

there's one pipe coming from the front 3, and one from the rear 3 cylinders

both on the same side though

I can't help but think that it's aesthetics.. I personally love the look of a split exhaust as on the 335i... also the exhaust note is something that people are starting to like to hear on a coupe..

I can imagine that BMW wants to distinguish it's new dual-turbo by having a visual cue... badges or not, as to the car having the I6DT.. I bet all the cars that get this power plant will get the exhaust... for aesthetic / marketing reasons, not for performance reasons.. just my humble opinion

For me, it works visually, everything in this exterior out of the box (not the aero (M) kit), I love this design a great fusion of sport and elegance

One thing I've notice about BMW over the years is that usually do the opposite of what everyone else is doing. IE, back in the early 90's, almost every Japanese car had those cheesy little chrome tips on their exhausts. I had a little Civic LX that had one chrome tip. At that same time BMW had no chrome tips on any of their cars.
During the late 90's and into 2000's, all of the Japanese cars started to go back to no chrome tips; and BMW now seems to be putting them back on a lot of their cars.
Just an observation of mine...

That is right! This I want to say also. The same with the M and X models, the twin split pipes are close together, but I can see that BMW changed that in the coming X5!
