Already Searched, How Do I Tell if I have Active Steering??
I already searched and cant find the picture of the engine bay with the active steering reservoir circled that differentiates it from the regular power steering reservoir...does anyone have it right off or can they tell me specifically how I can tell if my car has or doesnt have it. 2006 E90 w/ Premium Package...
I lchecked the fluid in the reservoir the other day and it needs just a touch of fluid and its the type I havent ever heard of before so thats what prompted my question..not sure where to find that fluid...cant think of what it was called and cant think of it right off the top of my head..and Im too lazy to walk outside, as its raining here thanks in advance

how many turns of the wheel does it take to go lock to lock (from all the way left to all the way right)?
if its ~2, you have active steering.

It takes one and a half turns from lock to lock when the car is stationary.

look at the power steering resevoir cap.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...+steering+lock I'll need to check the color of the cap tomorrow, but I think if it's green, then it's AS |

This is the steering lubrication reservoir for a non-AS car:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...41&hg=32&fg=20 This is the steering lubrication reservoir for an AS car: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...42&hg=32&fg=20 If you have a star shaped cap, you don't have active steering. As far as what fluid goes in the reservoir, the ONLY BMW that I know of that uses a different fluid than any other BMW before it are the E60 5 series, and that requires Pentosin CHF-11.S. Otherwise all BMWs that I know of uses DEXRON III ATF (you read that right, Automatic Transmission Fluid). |

Nope, my E34 5 series uses CHF-11S. Read your PS filler reservoir lid, it will tell you.

Ok. I just checked the fluid resevoir cap. The color is black and it reads:
PENTOSIN CHF 11S ONLY |

+1
I would have never gotten it, but the car comes with it. When they gave me a loaner without AS after I had my car for a while, the non AS car felt crap... Its very uselful in narrow European/Asian roads for sure, as well as in parking lots. |

I picked up the CHF-11s from NAPA. Should come in a green can and run you about $30.

Yeah I had no clue Active Steering was on any E90 options list!
I certainly is not mentioned in any of the USA Brochures. EDIT: It actually is mentioned in the 2006 brochures. I stand corrected.

For the LCI cars it was an offering but only optional on the 335i
It seems to be a buried option too as it is way down the line of list of juicier things sales folk would have dangled in front of paying customers.
