Just picked up my AW 2009 E90 335i M Sport. *** PICS ADDED *** ...beat it or baby it?

Hey guys I just drove back from the dealer after taking delivery of an 09 335i Alpine White 6MT sedan with saddle interior, Burl wood trim with the M Sport package + Executive package and iPod integration.

I am dying to open her up but a small part of me is saying to break it in but since it's leased do I start opening it up or soft drive it for a few hundred clicks?

I would vote for neither - Drive moderately for the first 400 miles or so and then let her rip!

If it is a lease then you already know the answer!

Yup, break her in gently. Who knows, you might just buy it at the end of the lease.

Drive it like you stole it

The argument for driving it very hard from the get go relates to running in the piston rings using the cross hatching on the bores, which are soon polished away

The idea is that redlining a new motor causes higher ring/bore wear due to the rough cross hatrching and results in a better ring/bore match, giving a more gas-tight seal with less blow by and therefore higher cranking pressures (and bhp) and less oil contamination.

This method of running in requires very careful heat up - redline- cool down cycling and is probably only good for blue printed race engines under carefully controlled condition

In my opinion, redlining a new motor is not a good idea. Piston rings and bearing are tight and high revs can result in localized hot spots which are very detrimental to engine lifetime and performance.

There's enough performance in a 335 BMW that running in for 1200 miles does not require driving slowly and frankly the anticipation is most enjoyable....like foreplay!

Great points, but this is the USA where most people seem to lease and get a new car every 3 years (though BMW is trying to change that, their dealerships are having a tough time getting rid of the off lease cars as well as selling new ones). When I wanted to pay for a 1,200 mile oil change out of my own pocket, the entire service dept. tried to convince me it's not needed, why do you insist on paying for something you don't need? Finally the svc. mgr. came out and said do you own this car or did you lease it? If you leased it, don't bother changing the oil until 1 year or 15k. If you own it, do the 1,200 for peace of mind and another at 7,500.

This is a rather strange mind set: if it's a lease, beat it; if you own it then take care of it.

Why not simply use the car correctly whether leased or owned since in both cases it will be with you for at least 3 years. You'll then know that your car has been properly broken in and it will give you years of pleasure without any problems (HPFP not withstanding).

1200-1500 miles easy to moderate, and then started getting on it and working it up to the redline...I just built my Camaros motor and broke it in this way and Im HAPPY for sure...

There are so many opinions on this one but I say go by what BMW says..

Are you planning on keeping at the end of the lease or are you sure youre gonna swap it..if so you could break it in a lil harder

Congrats for the best choice (car is just like mine)

PLEASE take care of it, and try to resist the urge to hammer it...do a proper break-in and you will be rewarded !

I just got through the break-in period on mine and did my first oil change today w/ 1450K miles. I took it easy and stayed under 4,500 rpm. There's enough power under 4500k so there's no reason to beat on it till after the break-in. I usually take it easy around town anyway and don't open her up till I'm on the highway.
