6 speed same in 335 as 328?

Does anyone know if the manual 6 speed transmission is the same for the 335 and 328?

Different transmissions is also what I have heard. I believe, but please confirm, that the 135i and 335i share the same transmission though.

The Steptronic transmissions in the 328 and 335 vary significantly (GM vs. ZF) but I'm honestly not sure about the 6MT. Interesting question though, hopefully someone knows since I'm curious now too.

All 4 trannies are different (328/MT, 335/MT, 328/step, 335/step).

128/328 share trannies and 135/335 share trannies.

Same transmissions (6MT and Step) and gearing in the 135 and 335.

I'm pretty sure the clutch pressure plate and gear ratios might be different, but i think the actual transmission is the same all across the board.

the steptronic in the 335 is bounds and leaps more responsive than the 328 (not dissin the 328 tranny so 328ers dont get ur panties in a ruffle cuz its better than alot of other steps.) Also the 3.73 vs 3.46 is a lil different and helps the 328 on the low end lots more than it does up top i suppose. I wonder if eventually we'd be able to change the final drives in our Trannies.

he's asking about the manual tranny, not the steptronic.

aside from the gear ratios and the pressure plate, i'm pretty sure they are the same transmission.

the steptronic cars use completely different tranny's made by different manufactures.

The ratios can be different even if the transmission is the same, I think?

They are different trannies. The 335 tranny has to handle 50% more torque.

Yes, if I'm not mistaken the 328i uses a Getrag while the 335i is a ZF unit.

You are not mistaken. The 328i has a Getrag Type I. The 335i has a ZF Type G (same as the M5 and M6).

328i MT part designation:
GS6-17BG - TCBK

335i MT part designation:
GS6-53DZ - THGX

the GS6-17BG is used in the E60 525i and the the 528i MT as well as the 325i and 328i

The GS6-53DZ is used in the 335i and E60 M5/M6 as well as the 535i

the last four characters designates different gear ratios and bell housings. ex: the 535i uses the THGX and the M5 uses the THGR

yes, but "final drive" is more common to front wheel drive transmissions, where the diff and ring gear is part of the transmission. Most rear wheel drive cars rely on the rear end differential for the final gear reduction. All you would need to do is change your rear diff, and not mess with the transmission at all - unless you have an XI, then you would probably have a front differential somewhere that you would need to change too.

Good info guys.

Have there been any changes in the manual tranny since 2007 in the 335? I ask because i test drove a 09 135 and the 6mt feel a lot more precise and smooth than my 07 335. I guess it could have been because it was new.

Glad I looked at this thread, I always assumed they were the same manual transmissions.
