automatic transmissions???

Last weekend I dropped my 06 330i for squeaky brakes. They gave me a 08 328i for a loaner. It was very quick especially in sports mode. I could feel it in my stomach when I would accelerate. After I got my 330i back it didn't feel as quick as the 328i. Are these new automatics more quick on accelerator response? The car just felt more nimble then my 6mt 330i tank. Just wondering if they are truly quicker or am I just smoking too much crack.

Crack. Definitely slower, unless there's something wrong with your 330i or your MT skills.

Could be the crack, but do consider the fact that unless you're a professional race car driver. Shifting manually will definitely slow you down in comparison with an Automatic. Most people buy MT for the thrill of it, not speed.

Its got to be the crack cuz the 330 and 328 are about the same curb weight. Not unless you drive with a fat chick then it explains why your 330 is not as nimble.

Its the newness of it...not to mention the fresh / brand new automatic is going to "feel" firm and fast.

Have you considered changing the MT fluid in your 330i? Its a good preventative maintenance measure and will make your transmission feel like new again.

OP: are you sure you didn't have a 335 loaner? It seems unusual that a 328 with auto transmission would feel quicker than your 330 with 6MT. Not saying it couldn't happen. Just unlikely.

It is the gear ratio of the new 328s. I have heard that despite the horsepower difference that the 328's are nippier cos of the gear ratio.

I would think so too. But I've heard some pretty strange questions asked on this forum lately..

I have not considered that until now. Thanks!

You are right I bought manual for the thrill and driving experience. I just thought the 328i auto was going to definitely feel slower then my 6mt 330i.

Thanks for all your input guys!

It was a 08 328i that reeked like cigarette. It was quicker when I switched it to Sports mode. I've never driven an automatic BMW until the loaner. The only automatic I drove was my mom's Honda Accord before I bought my 330i.

my 335 AT feels faster than my 335MT that I just returned. Its b/c its "easier" to wind it out with the AT--i can't shift as fast as the computer...

Well I took my car back for the squeaking. They re glazed the front parking brake lining and of course it still squeaks after I get it home. The only good thing about this last trip to the dealer was the 335i loaner car. Wow...that cars rips ass! The 335i is brutal. It was automatic with steptronic paddle shifting. The power is amazing. On the way home with my 330i I realized even though the 335i loaner I had was a beast I still like driving my 330i more. The reason is my car is 6mt. I mean in the end it's all about the driving experience. I'm sure a 335i 6mt would be a truly confounding experience.

I haven't driven an automatic 335i but my 6MT 335i is my first manual car and it is indeed a truly confounding experience compared to all the other cars I've ever driven.

It's cheap insurance. I also swapped out the rear differential fluid as well.

The 328i is just a nip slower than a 330i straight line. 200 lb feet of torque vs. 220. The difference in the automatics is the GM tranny (in the 328 the 325 also has the ZF) vs. the ZF in the 330i. Down shifts are much firmer and faster when in the braking zone.
