07 335i Coupe - Loud Exhaust
Hello all, I am a new member...
I searched for this, and didn't really see something similar. My car is completely stock, but the exhaust seems loud? I previously had an 01 325Ci which was really quiet. Is this normal or do I have something wrong? It almost sounds like a teenager car with the big muffler... |

Are you the original owner of the car?
If not maybe they had an aftermarket exhaust or some alterations to the stock one (ie removed some cats).

Yes I am. The car seems like it got louder after a software upgrade was done?? Is that possible? Seems crazy. Is the baffle valve you can see in the left tailpipe suppose to be open or closed at idel? Mine is open.

Just plug the black rubber hose back into the baffle and it will be quieter. |

There is a valve near the left exhaust that is closed to keep the noise down. The more recent software update you got opens that valve, hence the louder tone at cold start/idle. IIRC, the valve should close after the cold start and around town driving (essentiallly the 1K-2K rev band). It should then open up if you driver harder (after 3K rpm). The valve is there only to keep noises down and eliminate the slight drone around 2300 rpm, although this is the first time I read that someone actually thought the stock exhaust was TOO loud. People usually do the golf tee mod and permanently open that valve for the sportier tone.

Sorry everyone. Mine is open when the car is off (cold/hot does not matter). When I start it is stays open. It is almost a loud drone at 30 mph if I am not in 4th. So, should it be closed and then open at higher RPM's? If so, how do I get the thing closed? Did the software change modifiy that sensor or something? Sorry if this is a stupid set of questions....

it's because your exhaust valve is open...and you are probably backed up next to some sort of wall....when you turn your car on the sound of the exhaust reverberates back to your and it sounds much louder.

I know...shouldn't whine about the sporty sound, but you know what I love about BMW's (everyone has a fav thing), the sleeper effect. I like the class of the quiet car, and the knowledge that my 335 can take nearly anything when the light turns green.
I think I figured out my problem. The valve is stuck open like I have the golf tee mod. I will search some more, but I can't find pictures of the compartment or area in the trunk where I check to see if it is unplugged. |

is this your first software update? that might be the cause. read this thread about the loud exhaust and turbo lag, http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147781

Don't worry because you're not the only one. It's a result of a software "upgrade" and also results in turbo lag. Contact your dealer to fix it, but you'll probably need to b*tch about it.

That valve in the exhaust is only closed when the car is warming up to help heat the cats to meet emissions standards quicker. Frankly, the car sounds better when idling at a cold start then once its warmed up and ready to go. There are plenty of cars that will own us from a red light. The car is still a sleeper with the stock exhaust. Go stand next to a z06 or one of those stupidly loud mustangs that has 300hp. Its a 335, not an m3, hence, its a sleeper.

- Man you all are really beating me down! OK, sounds like a stealer visit is due. Has anyone noticed that the same valve flapper thing also rattles? I had my wife start the car while I looked at it, and the dang thing buzzes when I first fire it up...like it is really loose or something. It's not the wastegate rattle everyone complains about, it is just the metal flap rattling before it grabs. |

Not entirely true. Under partial load the flap closes to prevent exhaust drone. On this particular car the drone isn't bad, but rear seat passengers do get a tingly sensation on their buts, though none of my passengers have complained so far.
