I got a brand-new 2k9 X3 as a loaner, and the thing ticked so loudly I was afraid something was wrong. The SA said don't worry, it's just cold. I think the ticking was gone as I drove it later in the afternoon, but it really sounded like something was wrong when I took it that morning....

Hey, we can't expect our I6's to be as quiet as 90's Japanese cars with 200k which don't seem to make any sound at idle, right? LOL

"Still ticking" at only 81,000 miles and 3 years? It better be. The engine will easily go 300,000+ miles without being rebullt, if maintained properly. 81,000 miles, or 200,000 for that matter is nothing.

Thanks for input Will, I'm hoping to keep my ride for at least 7year, I only have 39k without any issues. When the time comes to rebuild it, I am going all out to make it a road racer with a bigger displacement.

Hahhaha
I know, I was being a smartass.
I had a 325 E90 that ran great up to about 54k when i got rid of it for a 330 E90 which also ran great.
For some reason the 06 cars were nice a quiet, My girlfriends 328 E90 is a POS.
That thing ticks soooooo loud its ridiculous.
I can even hear my 335 over her 328's tick

I'm in the same boat. 38k miles currently and first pump went out about 5k miles ago. I made a thread saying that there was a dude at the dealership whose 335i went over 100k and he never heard of the fuel pump issue nor has he experienced long cranks before.

The OP doesn't have a 335 though so it's of no worry to him. There's several members with non 335 E90s with 100k+ miles already.

in those 81k miles, how many incidents of road head have you come across?

and for that matter, what is a good road head to driving ratio? i was thinking somehting like 1bj:2000 miles... so by that, you should have banked like 40 so far.....

it has the ticking issue and now at 81k. no problem to the engine yet?

I have the ticking issue too, but only at 46k now. I guess I shouldn't worry too much about it then.

but others who got a new redesigned head say that the power will almost match the 328

It's a saying...his car doesn't really have a ticking noise. When people say xxxx is still ticking, it means it's still working fine.

It's not farfetched here in SoCal because unlike cities like New York City, everything was built around the use of private transportation.
