help how to clean speedometer.. PLS>

As you see my fellow Z4 owners, my speedometer have some stain inside the plastic cover infront of my milleage. How do I clean this up? Any body know how to dismantle this for me to wipe it clean?

You might want to bring that to your dealer to manage.

And they want to charge you for it? This is a major defect and not a consumable.

See whether they can cover it for you. (they will need to talk to BMW) but squeeze your options from them.

taking it out and apart is actually pretty easy,

You remove the entire speedo with one little bolt,
Look at the top of the speedo housing, in the middle you will see one torx bolt, T25 I think?

Remove that and then you can wiggle the speedo out,
Helps if you have the steering wheel pulled out and down, There is one or two electrical connectors in the back of the speedo, they are pretty simple to remove,

Then you need a smaller torx driver to take apart the speedo housing, somewhere between 6 and 10, Its been a while but again this isn't too hard,
I remember the plastic clips after you have removed the torx screws being harder to seperate,

Then the front of the speedo with the 2 plastic lenses your trying to clean will pull away and you can clean them

I would have loved to guide you with pictures but I don't need to take mine out so your gonna just have to figure it out with words

But its really not hard at all!

Wow, I have this EXACT problem. I figured I was the only person out there with it though.

Starscream, I'll TRY what you suggested but I sorta wanna take it to BMW and see if they'll do something about it ...

Starscream, worked like a charm!!

When you're removing the final piece that the two plastic lenses are connected to watch out for the two very small black connectors on the bottom. It took me a while to figure out what was holding the bottom of that piece to the main housing.

doesnt a dot appear next to the mileage when you disconnect the speedo??? its suppose to warn dealers or potential buyers that the speedo was disconnected and there could be mileage issues.

Hope someone can confirm this so I can clean my speedo asap.

Agree. No problem as long as the mileage shown on the speedometer matches up exactly with the mileage that is logged elsewhere in the car's computer.

No dots, woo hoo!

However, I looked down the other day and noticed that the small LCD display that shows the odometer, trip meter, etc. was not lit up ... I messed with the little control next to the headlight control that sets the brightness of everything (no idea why I did this) and the display came back on. It has only done it this once (that I've seen) and hadn't noticed this before I took the speedometer/tachometer cluster out and cleaned it. Anyone?

this is interesting, my speedometer also has some weird pattern of stains that appear to be on the inside of the glass casing near the bottom above the mileage readout. thanks for the diy!

Just follow the directions, it is really very very easy.
I did it a few days ago.
The stains were really annoying me and now it looks like new.
Very very pleased with the result!
