Insurance Cost/Providers

Ladies and Gents,

I just got a quote from Youi.com.au for the M3 - they are charging 6,700/yr for me to comprehensively insure the car... is that about right? Seems quite expensive to me - although this is my first car over 100k!

Would be great to know if any of you have recommendations.

Cheers,
Zender

I had a quote from BMW Insurance of around $2,200 pa. I'm 45, max NCB, no drivers under 25, excess $1,000, low risk suburb. Both my 135i and X5 are thru BMW Insurance. I ended up getting my M3 insurance through my professional liability/business insurers and ended up under $2,000.

That $6,700 quote sounds like a rip! I guess you've had quotes from the bigger mainstream insurers?

Yup, that's what I thought - my Dealer said that it should be around $1700-$2000. I was worried there for a second! I figure that I should be able to get my M3 through my brokers - that or i'll just go via BMW Insurance - I just found out that I'll know what the specs are in August RE: MY2010 build! Still that is 4 weeks away! Grrr... never wanted the clock to go faster!

What do you do for a living AMK?

I'm in the pharmaceutical business. Unfortunately, unlike some of our US cousins I didn't get mine as a graduation present - had to work hard for it.

I guess if an M3 cost US$60,000 equivalent here, you'd see a lot more running around!

Which is one of the reasons why it is good to be an owner of an M3 here... they are rare and beautiful!

Re the insurance, based on past experience in insuring mine I’d contact the larger and specialist car insurers and compare to BMW Insurance (currently underwritten by Allianz). The big question to ask an insurer for an M3 is whether they will send it to a recommended BMW repairer and there are at least 2 in Brisbane. Also check out the excess – you can probably reduce your premium with a higher excess as well.

BTW you can send yourself more insane waiting by using the shipping tracking web sites once its built - all you need is your VIN once it comes off the line. Check out http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43692

Thanks bdh! How long have you had your M3? I think I'm going to drive myself insane... as it is I'm asking the dealer to get me a car to drive around for a few days (M3 if possible.. hehe)

Had it since July 2008 although had it on order for more than 12 months – the wait was bloody hard especially seeing the Top Gear tests and watching the 6mt versions being delivered. It is worth it though – this is a vehicle that has exceeded my expectations – the next PITA you’ll go through is the break in period – what a daily temptation that was !

NRMA. Safe Suburb. $1,760. 36 yr driver. Havent tested them yet for a claim but ensured that I have choice of repairer. BMW also pushed their insurance on me but from memory I think the premium would have been double. Had Allianz the year before with a claim on an E46. Brillant service. They would have payed me out (accident on the harbour bridge not at fault) or repaired whatever I chose. It sucks in Sydney hunting for insurance.

$1,099 with CGU, 3 years new car replacement, $2,000 excess (I increased it from $1,000) on a low km policy (you need to do less than 10,000km/year) and BTW I'm 29.

Some pretty cheap policies here!

IIRC when mine was new Allianz (BMW) wanted $2200.. but they had a clause that stated you must have the BMW tracker device installed, nasty, another $2k I think.

I am now with AAMI in the cars second year of life at ~$1800.

What if you wanted some other brand of tracking device installed?

Now that is one insurance company that would be at my absolute bottom on my list. I don't know if your in Sydney but with AAMI there is no choice of repairer AND if you have an accident you have to wait for them to see you at one of their service centres. AND THEY TELL YOU WHICH ONE. I wouldn't trust AAMI with my mums Civic. Good Luck

Either one is certainly better thatn the 6k+ deal out of Youi.com.au still not sure about the tracker and definitely want to be able to send the car to a BMW repairer!
