Detecting the presence of a tune, or detecting that there was a tune flashed then removed?

Still not a super big deal if you remove the piggyback hardware prior to going in for service. Clearing any suspicious codes with a BT cable will seal the deal.

It's more targetted to detecting reflashed ECUs. From what I heard, it goes a bit beyond comparing checksums. As for piggybacks, it apparantly drops the fuel flow allowance to make it easier to trip tuner codes. BMW is currently working on making the MSD81 unflashable. Or at least staying a couple steps ahead of the tuners. They aren't messing around.

So are the MSD80 guys a little more safe, or will BMW want to switch everyone to the 81?

From what has been explained to me by people who know, MSD80 users are reasonably safe and flashable. Although temporary hurdles will exist. However, the MSD81 will soon be unflashable for all intents and purposes. With BMW adding more and more security in an attempt to keep of flash tuners. I believe it has already started this update in Europe with the 335Ds which currently can no longer be flashed. From what I've been told at least.

I don't believe this is accurate. People thought that the 335 couldn't be flashed at all at one point. Nothing is unflashable. It's just going to take a little longer to do it.

That's why I said "for all intents in purposes". To keep something unflashable, all BMW has to do stay a step (or two) ahead of the aftermarket. Something they really haven't put to much time into until now. This is why they updated the MSD81 hardware because they knew that the MSD80 had too many open doors that couldn't be closed through simple firmware updates at the dealership. This isn't the case with MSD81 which I purposely had retrofitted into my early 07 for this very reason. The dealerships are being encouraged to update DMEs that they believe to be flashed. And they are working on enhanced interrogation functions to determine just that.

BMW wants everyone to buy their flash. Not anyone else's. It's all about dollars.
