Hey guys. Here's something I do with my spare time

I know a lot of you guys are not into Hip-hop but these are two examples of what I make. Will get an MC to rap over them at some point...hope you like. All comments welcome, even negative.

Good work

I liked Military on many levels. Would spoil it for my ears by dropping a rap over it. Often prefer original instrumentals over the vocal versions. But that's just me. Depends on the style of rap. Hard aggressive rap is not my bag. Prefer the smoother style that this track deserves.

All these comments relate to Hip-Hop:

Who are you listening to currently?

It sounds old/date at best i'd say retro.

And musically the patterns are too simplistic.

Where is the groove, the hook?

Other thing is the sounds you have used aren't interesting. They sound straight off a keyboard from the 80/90's.

Get a good sound for each instrument, then put it together. Think out the box. Not gritty enough or with any life/breath/air in it.

It's the high level of reverb and echo that's on the tracks. Need to pull them back and then it'll feel retro without the 'old' feel.

True mate. Currently I'm listening to Wale, 50 Cent some Jay Z etc. Nothing really out there atm. I'm no pro and only really starting out in the field of music production. It's more of a hobby than anything else. I use Fruity Loops which is by anyones standards a basic music programme, so of course the sounds are factory and not tuned. Want to get started on that and then move on to something like Pro Tools or Reason where my sounds can be heard and feel "realer".
Simplistic patterns do make good beats mate...look at Dre in the 80s 90s...and these are samples not finished beats.

Just quickly.

Dre doesn't have simplistic beats.

Look at the Quantise function for hi-hats and also groove the snare drum to a be a bit lazy and bit behind the beat every ones a while. Also program the drums on each bar. Use loops for basic stuff, but keep it interesting all the way through out by brining in different elements in different times and signature very subtly so that you hardly notice it but it's there.

Try things like distortion and other effects on different instruments at different times.

The way i look at it, every bar should be different in at least one way.

I realise you are using FL, but each loop can come in every 8 or 6 or even 5 to throw things out.

Keep it up though. Everyday is a school day.
I am lucky enough to have grown up with some good musicians and a good producer, so i have learned tons over the years.

Lets hear some head nod shizzle
