that doesn't sound right at all. I checked the TL and it's 5k for the first year. I'd think it'd be hard to find a 1 yr old 330 for 11k less than new. They're in such high demand. 5k sounds more like it.

If those numbers are correct, which I doubt because they seem REALLY high, the depreciation difference makes the value of the 325 and 330 nearly equal after year 1.
325 depreciation is at $8874 according to Yahoo. I doubt that seriously, because the private-party sale on KBB for my car is around $33,000-34,000. I paid less than $37,000 new. |

Well for what it's worth, I just bought a used 330xi with 8500 miles that stickered for $46,950 for $37,000. It was from a non-BMW dealer and I don't think that they had any interest in keeping the car on their lot for too long.

Dang... Ouch. I've owned my '06 for almost 13 weeks... put on almost 13k miles. I guess I just lost $13k. Oh well, at least I'm having fun and enjoying my ride.
But I'm more shocked that someone drives just as much as I do! Let's hope these N52 motors and transmissions hold up! Looks like I'll be keeping this one for a while.

12000 miles and kiss your ass good bye $12,000. Paid 40k, current value 28k. Depreciation > BMW? Japanese vehicles don't lose value that fast...

No one can match you there. If you don't mind me asking, how the hell did you put 12k miles in 5 months?

You're buying a car at the retail price and trading it to the dealer at the wholesale price. First, you will eat the dealer markup. That is a "sunk cost". Then, the steepest part of the depreciation curve of most assets occurs in the first year. Automobile depreciation is definitely not linear. You can find depreciation equations online and play with them. On a $45,000 sticker price automobile with a small or no discount, $11,220 in first year depreciation would not surprise me. This is why most people do not sell a car after just one year. You can probably do much, much better with a private sale in the first year. This is not a matter of fairness; it's a free market. It is not any better with leasing; just try weaseling out of a three year lease after only one year. Caveat emptor! |
