Do you ever.........

.......think about a major downgrade in car?

Me and the missus share a Cayman S, and the E92 330d

We love the cars and can afford them both comfortably. We both get car allowances that pay for the finance payments on both.

Worked out some rough numbers, for the miles we do and taking into account all running costs, changing for say 2 new Fiesta Zetec S's would save us £1k a month

Like I said, we love our cars, but £1k does a lot, and some of todays "lesser" cars have great toys and are a riot to drive

mmmm...........

I know what you mean, but what I'm trying to say is - are my 2 cars worth more than £1k a month more than 2 decent superminis?

No doubt my cars are great and all that, but £1k a month great?

Put it another way - drive 2 nice Fiestas for 5 years, mortgage gone, then I could buy whatever cars I like this side of £100k each.

Or retire sooner

etc

It's all about your priorites mate. I guess I'm young therefore more reckless so I'd stick with the gas guzzlers though it should be the other way round!

5 years is a long time mate...

I'd like to add these new Fiesta's are so nice. Saw a black one today, pure stock. Looked epicly good for a hatchback. They really are nice looking cars.

Looked at downgrading last Summer to save up to £200 per month. Didn't happen in the end. Up for review again come May when I need to order a new car for August/Sept. However my savings are not as big as yours.

I'd try to pay my mortgage off if I were you.

Depends mate. Times do change. You have had fun with cars sonif you feel you would benefit more from saving the money then do it. You will be pissed in
6 months if you feel the same way and hadn't
"downgraded" (don't like that word) you can always get some cool motors again.
1k a month does go a long way. 4 months later and it's a noce holiday.

I recently downgraded to an SE and am coping fine!

All about priorities, we love our cars, they cost us loads. Do I have enough in my pension = NO. Paid my mortgage off = NO. Should I spend less on cars = Yes. Why.....

I did try this once before, bought a Mondeo TDCI - nice car

Sold it 3 months later for something sporty

I suspect its all in my head and wont happen, but I just wondered if anyone else has these thoughts

Maybe I should persuade the wife to get rid of her car first.......lol

I've downgraded and will eventually upgrade again tbh.

Perfectly happy with the S5 and hopefully a RS5.

Suppose some would argue that you've been there, done that with the Porsche Turbo, which is true, but it's such a complete all round car imo and the closest thing to a motorbike for sheer bloody fun and adrenalin..........got to have another one!

Sorry, not helping really!

I`ve been "slumming it" in a Mondeo for nearly 2.5yrs now and don`t miss driving an expensive car daily TBH. It`s great being able to abondon the car anywhere, not worry about car park dings and not attract unwanted attention.

I'd sell the 330D and share the Cayman and the downgraded car through the week.
Come the wk/end you'd both appreciate the Cayman more, and any savings could be ploughed into the mortgage account.

OK it would take longer to pay the mortgage off, but at least the money saved would be put towards an appreciating asset and not a depreciating one.

Over the last few years I've been on a constant downgrade. 335i to 330d saved £250p/m (excluding fuel), 330d to 350Z another £200p/m, and changing again tomorrow to ??? where I'll finally reduce my finance to zero.

Unfortunately the savings haven't gone to reducing my mortgage or anything sensible like that but more to fund a bigger house and growing family. Must get the missus back to work then the fun can commence again...

Hmm I thought about it this time, could have got something like a Focus ST for a good price with decent mileage and spec, and they are far from bad cars!!

But I didn't - can't say why, I want a fucking crazy 135i is prob why - and Matt, you can kiss my teeth!!

I gave some genuine consideration to getting a Mondeo Estate recently.

Brokers are showing discounts of up to 30% from list price at the moment and I could have saved about £150 a month by getting the top of the range one on a Lease Purchase deal.

In the end £150 a month just ain't worth it.

Focus ST was a similar sort of saving. But, they look a bit mental and there just isn't as much room.
