Shhhhh! You didn't hear this from me...

Sorry, this is a bit off topic, but...

Let's just say I have this friend who lives near a gas station, and he's pretty good friends with this guy who runs the gas station. Anyway, this guy (who runs the gas station) tells my friend not to bother putting the premium gas in the car, because all three grades of gas come from the same underground tank! And of course, the guy says, shhh...don't tell anyone about that!

With gas prices so high, it makes me wonder how many other gas stations around the country are doing the same thing! Are you still going to use the premium gas in your E90, even after hearing a story like this one?

What gas station is this?

For most folks, there is an obvious and conspicuous difference between using premium and regular gas. I think it's a pile of B.S. you're being fed.

It's probably some liquor store with 3 pumps....coming from the same tank.

But I usually get my gas from an established brand.....i.e. Mobil, Shell, or Chevron........

Yeah....that is ridiculous from a major oil company...sounds like a mom and pop grow op. This is a classic case of fraud my friend...if it's not bovine excrement..call crimestoppers and get some$.

I'm sure some businesses (small ones mostly, or foreign owned) do this. It is also well known that they tamper with the dials on the pumps so that you're not putting in as much as you're being charged for. This is fraud and gouging and is illegal. I would call the state officials and ask them to check them out. Anyone doing this should be imprisioned or at least fined out of business.

reminds me of the friend of a friend of a friend tipping that stock xyz is going to boom on the stockmarket anecdotal story.

one little unsubstantiated story is not something to rely on.

shh, don't tel anyone but i will continue to use 98 ron petrol in my car until someone proves otherwise to me.

I took delivery Friday on my car and my Sales person told me that they have owned BMWs for years and have always used REGULAR! I was very surprised to say the least. The Sales person has a relative who has been head of maintainence for another luxury dealership for 20 yrs and he says there is no difference in using regular even though BMW says everywhere to use premium. What are your thoughts? I have always used mid-grade in my past BMWs.

I've only put premium in my recent cars (my E90, my previous S4) but I used to put regular in my Jetta. You know, considering this article, though, I might just go to regular.

Anyone else thinking that, too?

Yes. I love my car and want to "baby it" for as long as I can. When I bought it, I didn't care that I had to use the premium fuel...this was something I knew about and didn't have a problem with.

But now I do. If it's true that they mix fuels from two tanks to get middle grade, then I'll bet there are some places that actually charge for three types of fuel, though it all comes from the same tank. The place I was talking about first was a mom and pop shop, but I've been getting my gas from a well-known, massive company lately, and I'll tell you what--the premium doesn't seem to "perform" as well as it has. My gas mileage and performance used to be excellent when using premium in the cadillacs for funerals, but now we just put regular in the caddys and they still drive as they had with premium...same gas mileage, same performance.

I think I'll downgrade to regular and see how it works. Sure I don't want to ruin my car, but if it's all the same, what's the difference? The fact is, unless we actually own the station ourselves, we'll never know what we're actually getting ...unless there are chemists here on the board willing to do some testing for the rest of us

agreed. I want to baby my car as much as possible still, too, but hell, if it's all the same, why pay through the nose when you don't have to? I might try a tank of regular, too...

anyone else want to try it first and let us know how it goes?

Try living in California where I just paid $3.29 for premium. Yeah, we drive nice cars, but why waste money if we don't have to....

Took the words right out of my mouth! Where did you pay $3.29 for premium, though!? Last week I saw it for $3.09 at the Shell by my house. I haven't filled up lately, so it might have jumped since I last checked, but DAMN. It's unbelievable.

...but still nothing compared to Europe

I just saw on the news that we San Diegans have the highest average gas prices in the nation.
