LSD install

What is a reasonable price to expect for installation of a LSD?

Paid $700.00 for BMW tech to install a Quaife at a private garage.
The absolute best mod I've done to the car.

Depends what you are doing. If you are just swapping the whole pumpkin, 3-4 hours is reasonable, provided you have right tools (e.g., thin 52mm wrench). If you are opening it up and installing the LSD, then another 2-3 hours. If you have a welded ring gear then you definitely want to swap the whole final drive.

Specialized shops that have done lots of these jobs can do them more quickly.

Life would be so much easier if BMW offered LSD as a $1k option...

BMW quoted me 3 hours for getting the (welded) ring gear out, and putting one with a LSD attached to it back in.

Sorry, no - not a welded diff.

The Wavetrac I got for 1100 in the initial GB. Install was about 600 at a local shop (one of the few options in this town about 100 miles west of H).

Birds and other very experienced shops might be able to do it in 3-4 hours, but any shop doing this for the first time will take a lot longer. You need to remove exhaust, undo drive shaft and half-shafts, lower the pumpkin, open it up, pull seals & bearings carefully, remove ring gear, heat it up to expand it a bit, put LSD in, set lash w/ shims, put everything back together very, very carefully, fill with oil, lift it back up and reattach a million bolts torqued properly, replace seals and washers, reinstall exhaust. There are a lot of things that can go very wrong. You want someone that knows wtf they are doing for this. Or just swap the whole pumpkin.

If you have a ring geaar with the LSD mounted to it, the swap should be not that difficult or? They would only need to open the pumkin, remove the (in my case) welded ring gear, and put in the new one with LSD. What could go wrong here

fitting the diff in the pumpkin is the most difficult part.

You have to put thin shims between the diff and the beasing to "centrate it" so that there is the right gap between the gearing pinion and the ring gear.
If the gap is too big you will have noise. If it is too smal you will fuck up the gearing. It has to be done by someone that has experience.

It happened to the dude from south africa, fucked-up the gearing after swap to quaife. So he end-up to put a complete M3 pumpkin+diff without opening it...
M3 diff has a special gearing to reduce drive line loss
I will go this route too.

Prior to 1995, you could get an LSD as an option on the majority of models.
