I donated last night. It's the least anyone that can afford a bmw can do for his/her fellow man.

Thanks for posting, OP.

Please donate.

The place is a real mess...have a bud who's flying a rescue chopper in Port au Prince, and he's never seen such widespread destruction. As folks who have worked in PauP previously, and noted how bad it smelled, he said with all the bodies everywhere, multiply the old smell x10.

Sad situation, and best wishes to the Haitian people.

Actually, by definition it will be slower.

Think about it: if it takes, say, 25 days for them to move stuff around/buy stuff/other logistics once they have the money, then it will take just that much longer with the wireless pay-by-phone...because it'll take weeks for them to get the cash in the first place.

I guess what I mean is that the immediate emergency needs (food/water) will pretty much be taken care of, but the donations will contribute to the 'quality of life'/rebuilding phase, for which the timing delay through the billing process should have less relative impact on the significance of the contributions.

This may sound cruel, but Haiti can thank the US, EU, and other countries for annually subsidizing 30-40% of their annual budget.

US has given 2.7 billion dollars to Haiti since 1995, so if you paid taxes in the US you gave to Haiti.

The U.S has butt-raped Haiti for so long it's sad that people still pretend that we don't owe them more. It's not a conspiracy theory, its right in our faces.

Ridiculous how people can be heartless even now. Especially those of us fortunate enough to buy luxury cars and not worry how to feed our kids. It brings me to literally to tears hearing a Haiti boy wonder where his mother and father are.

Donate the ten bucks. Then do more.

#1 There's no amount of $$$ that can help Haiti right now, it's a logistics problem.

#2 Your donations made today go into a general fund. In all likelihood it will not be spent in Haiti.

Yes the about 70 yrs ago the US "butt raped" Haiti as you put it, but conversely we've been donating billions upon billions of dollars since then (Almost 50% of their annual budget).

~50% of the population is under 20.

So you're suggesting what? The ARC will need cash in order to continue their part of the recovery efforts in Haiti. Regardless of how cynical you are the greater part of their humanitarian crisis is about to begin and donating will help that organization to do what they do. It's something.

Doing nothing will definitely not help.

So what's that? About $1 per year per person here? I kind of doubt that had any effect on the lives of E90post members and I'm sure it went a long way down there.

Really? So a Hatian can build a new shack? The point I'm trying to make is that it's not for a lack of $$$ right now. Here's the deal. Whenever there's a major tragedy (Tsunami, earthquakes, Floods, etc) all of the NGO/NPO's gear up their collection efforts. They're feeding off your sympathy. The Red Cross will take in millions of dollars yet a the majority will not go to Haiti. Haiti is suffering from a logistical/leadership problem NOT $$$. They have ONE runway, their roads are poor, they're overpopulated thanks to International subsidies, and probably not far from another rebellion. In fact it's international donations which hurt the country more because their "elites" making a killing off it, while the poor think it's a good deal because they don't have to work or demand more from their leadership.

If you really want to help, fly down there, and help distribute food/water. Just make sure you get your shots.

I am 55 years old and can still remember the pictures on TV of Biafra, a staving child with extended stomach and mother sitting swatting fly's from her face. I just wonder if going into these places makes a difference, it doesn't fix it. I still see this in Africa and now in Haiti. I was in Haiti in 1982 and the only thing wrong with Haiti are Haitians. As I look at the pictures from there I see Haitians walking around waiting for a hand out, no one digging or cleaning up. Look at the footage of Germany in WWII after the bombing of the major cities there, those people were cleaning up brick by brick while the fires where still burning. Something is wrong there and I think its time for Haitians to take control of their own destiny.

No I'm just trying to give people the real picture of whats going on down there and saying if you really care, $10 doesn't do anything. Go give a homeless person an old winter coat. The Haitians will be fine assuming they don't get shot while trying to cross into the D.R.

I agree. Unfortunately the majority on this board are too young to remember or weren't even born at this time.
