Very dirty car about to receive Zaino treatment...

My E90 hasn't been washed in a month! It has a coat of dust and filth. The rims are sooty black. I'm going to apply Zaino soon. How should I wash the car before applying Zaino? Should I still start with Dawn? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Your car is ready for a long nice wash. Check out this link for everything you may ever want to know about washing your car including steps for Zaino. Hope it helps.

What I did:
Dawn, rinse, claybar, Z7 wash, dry, Z2 w/zfx, Z6, Z2 w/zfx(2nd thru 5th coat with Z6 between all coats) then finished with Z8.

Go for it!

Good notes above with some more thoughts-

1. Combine Dawn wash with the clay evolution. Use the dawn soap solution as a lubricant AFTER you've used a good mitt to get all the dirt off.

2. Do a SMR evolution. Zaino SMR works well by hand although a PC is best. Hard to believe there's a black car out there that couldn't benefit from a SMR evolution

3. No need to Z7 wash after the dawn if you don't do SMR. Dawn gets rid of everything! The Z7 wash is desired only if you use GEPC P21S as a pre-app to Zaino.

4. Mist some Z6 on the pad b/f going to work on it. Pad should be damp (water) but not soaked.

5. Use the Zaino on the glass if you have extra. Gives it fantastic pop!

Hope this helps-

~John

Yes- all painted trim pieces/plastic/even wheels (appropriately finished ones). You'll see the 'pop' on the lenses and such after application.

I didn't use Dawn on the new car and it came out fine. I also only clay bar-ed any visible water spots or treesap/ crap and did 2 coats of the z2/zfx and z6. This all took about 5 hours as it was. It really looks great- it doesn't neeed any more- especially on a 3 yr lease. The zaino seems to repel dust- the car always looks clean.

Yup, it's the dishwashing soap. The reason is it strips all wax and grease(the stuff it was designed for) from the paint surface to have a "clean" slat to begin with. Wax is not optically correct and has many diffractions so you don't want to enhance those less than optical reflections. Dawn does no harm to the paint unless you don't put something back on it after washing to protect be it turtle wax or zaino.

The sun was out in full force today, so I decided to snap a few "before Zaino" pictures. I saw so many swirlies! I didn't realize that I had so many swirls and on a brand new car, no less.

Do you Zaino expert users think that Z5 can fix these swirl marks? Or do I need to resort to an orbital polisher?

The Z5 should be all you need, you don't need to resort to an orbital polisher.

Thanks for the quick reply. My bodyshop claims that it can remove the swirl marks by running my car through the "machine and the pad" without removing any clear coat in the process. Should I let him do that?

I have never seen a car outside a showroom, no, make that outside a motorshow, looking like that. I hope that magic stuff's available here.

Your 161 alloys look fantastic, have you changed the hub logo, doesn't it usually say BMW on it?

Thanks, folks- here's one more.

This is Z-7 car wash (Not Dawn!), Clay bar touch -up on spots, Z-2 (with ZFX), Z-6, Z-2 (with ZFX), Z-6, Z-2 (with ZFX), Z-6.
I put it all on the wheels as well. Brake dust hardly sticks to them now.

Oh, and my wheels say BMW on them- for some reason the letters didn't photograph.
