When it'll tell with a warning icon symbol when it is over heating. Don't worry.
The 330i engine runs at three different temperature settings when under different conditions so BMW decided to not put a temperature gauge in to avoid confusion. |

In the US, BMW used to put a water/coolant temp gauge in the cluster. But water temp only tells so much about the engine, what you really want is an oil temp gauge. Most people who are serious about it install an aftermarket VDO gauge.

If you really want to read water temp, buy a basic OBD-II code/data reader for your laptop or palm pilot. It'll give you all the realtime data you want (engine temp, fuel corrections, fuel pressure, manifold pressure, calc load, ign. advance, etc,.) Auterra makes a good software bundle called Dyno-Scan, fwiw.

Water temp is not as accurate as oil temp. Even then, the E90 runs the temp in various modes depending on whether it's aiming for fuel efficiency or power. So, there's no point in having a temp gauge fluctuating all over the place. Search for E90fleet's explanation.
That being said, if you really, really still need to know the water temp, you'll need to unlock the hidden menu item 7.00 here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ht=hidden+menu And if you need an oil temp gauge, that would be a good reason to get the 335i.

Apex-i makes a product called the i-Moni, which plugs directly in to an OBDII port. This compact unit can tell you your vehicle's Engine RPM, Water Temperature, Intake Air Temperature, and Vehicle Speed. However, it may not read all the parameters from every car. I don't know if it has been tested on the E90 or E92.

Any OBD reader will read coolant temp, boost etc. On the diesel i get these, plus MAF intake temp, EGR valve %, and turbo out temp as the main ones. Just don't believe you will be able to read hundreds of values as most are not on the BMW standard OBD pins. Reading and erasing fault codes is not possible either on BMWs, you'll need BT for that.
I got the dashdyno two years ago. Thought it offered beter value with the PC software, it has different screen layouts to choose from, can datalog on SD card, do plots etc. And the black keys, white symbols, and red backlighting does not look too out of place. Screen is blueish though. Mine sits in the ashtray (cut the bottom out of it) so i can close it and its out of sight Warning: If you buy one make sure you know how the reader powers off. The dashdyno was originally on voltage drop after shutdown. That's doesn't happen on BMW as the ECU stays alive when it sees a reader (for 30 minutes..good drain on your battery..). Following communication with Dashdyno they released a beta version for me with an option so the reader shuts down x seconds after seeing no rpm, and then the ECU shuts down correctly too. That is now a std, selectable option |

To be real honest, I'm kinda glad my car doesn't have this gauge. I had an '89 E90 325is and that gauge was all over the place and *very* distracting because of that.
On a side note, I found it interesting that the 2010 328i E93 I test drove recently had this gauge so there are some 328's out there that have a real temperature gauge...perhaps on all the newer 328s or the E93 328s?

All coupes and verts have the oil temp. Sedans only have it on the 335i.

There is a solution from Garmin this year called EcoRoute HD. It includes a bluetooth dongle that plugs into the OBD-II port to transmit coolant temp and a whole load of other engine parameters to a nuvi. Of particular interest to modders is the ability to check and clear engine codes before dealer visits.
Here's the CNET link: http://ces.cnet.com/8301-31045_1-104...rColumnArea1.2 Garmin ecoRoute HD software running on a Nuvi (Credit: Garmin) When we last heard about Garmin's add-on to make its ecoRoutes software smarter, it was going under the name of ecoRoutes ESP and details were sparse. Now, as we approach CES 2010, Garmin has revealed new details surrounding the device on its corporate blog and a new name, ecoRoute HD. OK, so the name's not that different. The big news here is the announcement of the expected availability date of March 2010 and the suggested retail price of $149.99. The ecoRoutes HD system is built around two parts: the wireless OBD-II port dongle, which interfaces with your vehicle's sensors and engine computer, and the ecoRoutes firmware that is available on the Nuvi 1260, 1370, 1390, 1490, and 1690 models, as well as future devices. Once connected, the wireless dongle will transmit all of the gathered info via a Bluetooth connection to a paired Nuvi navigator. Using the info gathered, the Nuvi's ecoRoutes software can more accurately measure your fuel economy and driving habits to tell how greenly you're driving and how you can improve. Car geeks and users who want a taste of information overload can also monitor vehicle sensors such as intake air temperature, coolant temperature, throttle position and engine load, intake manifold pressure, battery and charging system information, mass airflow rate, timing advance, and emissions. If any of this sounds like Greek to you, then ecoRoute HD also offers a basic fuel economy and driving coach view. Finally, DIYers can check and clear engine trouble codes without a visit to the dealership. Of course, this isn't exactly a new technology. OBD-II readers and fuel economy meters have been around for almost as long as the OBD port itself, and wireless dongles for the port have been around for a few years, as well. However, Garmin's solution does allow owners of supported Nuvi devices to add this functionality without sticking yet another LCD display on their dashboard or windshield. Plus, the $149 MSRP is a bargain. We'll be bringing more details and photos of the ecoRoute HD system live from the show floor at CES 2010, so stay tuned. |
