Shift points for AT
(I posted this in another thread but I don't think anyone noticed, at least no one responded so here it is again)
Does anyone else get frustrated when your AT downshifts at 1000 rpm in M-mode. I'm coming from a manual (Audi S4) to a 335i AT w/paddle shifters and when I want to run downhill with the least amount of engine braking I'm accustomed to shifting into a high gear, but the AT program in M-mode up shifts at what seems like an excessively high, 1000 rpm. Its frustrating. Is there anyway to reprogram this? If I were driving a MT I wouldn't shift up until the engine started lugging at ~500 rpm. Or, what about shifting into neutral? Seems like a bad idea to me. Any harm shifting in and out of neutral? Thanks. |

Only problem with neutral is you have to apply the brake to get out of it.

Autos can protect themselves from guys who allow high performance engines to start lugging.
Seriously, 1,000 rpm is not high is it? There will be a bit of variation around that figure, according to how hard you are driving. HighlandPete |

So it's downshifting to a lower gear before you want it to, as you're coasting downhill and off the throttle? I don't think this is adjustable. This really isn't an issue for me, but I guess it's something you're noticing coming from a MT?

Yes, its going into a lower gear before I want it to. I wonder what happens on the other side, does it shift just below redline? I have not tried this.
As long as you are moving you do not need to apply the brake to shift out of neutral. That restriction only seems to be enabled when you are stopped. I haven't tried this on my 335i but I played around with it quite a bit a loner 328. I think 1000 rpm is too high for a downshift. I still feel significant engine braking and the engine doesn't appear to be near where it would loose power (lugging). Maybe some of you MT guys can let me know. |
