BMW to build Z10 Supercar

BMW to build a new Rear/Centrally mounted V10 rear wheel drive Supercar. Not since 1979 has BMW made a Supercar with the M1, but sources at BMW have revealed that a new Supercar, likely to be called the "Z10" is firmly on the drawing boards. Production could even be at the Rolls Royce Goodwood plant as it already has capacity to build another car. Using a highly developed version of the latest M5 & M6 V10 5.0 litre 500Bhp engines, increased by another 50cc's could make the new V10 capable of developing 550Bhp. Using the latest lightweight materials including aluminum & carbon-fibre throughout weight could be kept to 1200 Kg & have the power to weight ratio of 458 Bhp per tonne. Burkhard Goschel the head of BMW's development is said to "offer the ultimate in lateral dynamics", & must be cable of out performing the V8-powered M3 & Z4M. It will use the latest electronic & mechanical aids to enhance it's road holding capabilities & wind tunnel development will ensure aerodynamic down force is a priority. Active spoilers & venturi underbody will ensure the cars sticks to the road like an F1 car. BMW hopes to keep the price within £90,000 ($150,000) price bracket & sales should start in 2008.

Cool, looks like it will compete with the Audi R9, though I believe the R9 is only going to be ~$100k. I think I like the R9 styling a little better though they are similar in general.

edit: also, the R9 has 610 hp from a V10.

ooooooooh, looks promising! I look forward to seeing what BMW can bring to the supercar crowd. I gotta say, though, that I really like that Audi R9, too, though.

True, but sometimes performance is more about the fun-to-drive factor and numbers don't mean as much.

this is very true. I mean, sure the SL 65 AMG is a rocket with wheels, but how fun can it be to drive? If it's anything like a standard Benz, then no thanks! For that money, I'd go with an M6 and FEEL the driving experience...even though there's something to be said about having a twin-turbo'd 12 under the hood

My boyfriend drove an SL65 and he said it was scary fast but didn't drive very well. He said it was really touchy and not smooth in any way. However the first time he drove an M3 he told me he doesn't think he's ever driven a car that was such a blast to drive.

yeah, I always figured the AMG cars would be like that - scary fast but not all that exciting to drive. Figures, though, as Mercedes-Benz's MO is to build something that drives smoothly and luxuriously, not necessarily engagingly. BMW, on the other hand, prides itself on being a driver's car, you konw? "The Ultimate Driving Machine" here in the US and "Freude am Fahren" (Joy through driving) in Germany. I'll take an ultimate driving machine over a Benz almost any day

course, I do admit, I'm way biased
