long trips: spare tire/mobility kit

hey guys,
I'm planning to drive down to PA this wknd and I'm considering taking my car. I still have my winter 18s with non runflats. Just wanted to wear the tires out plus I don't think I can handle the stress of driving on 19s with runflats for 8 hrs.

I looked into the mobility kit from bmw which they sell to M owners. They are asking something like $250 but all it does is patch up the hole with liquid thing in a can. Is that worth it?

The spare tire for my car is $500.

I have no idea what to do. If you guys can help or have any advice please chime in.

Thanks.

step 1 goto Canadian Tire
step 2 find: "MotoMaster Inflate & Seal"
step 3 pay the nice lady at the front the $8.99 plus tax
step 4: have a good trip.

Ditto......or try and find a Continental Tire Compressor/sealant kit at a tire dealer. I paid about $75.

They also had an airman / slime combo as well. Same idea.
Relax and enjoy the trip.

ditto...the slime works but keep in mind after the slime is used, you cant repair the puncture. if space isnt a factor, just bring the spare, along with the jack and a wrench

i looked into the conti confortkits but the places i called are like $115-120 ...can you guys tell me where else to call cuz i only found 2 places selling them in Mississauga ... the only reason I'm don't want to get the motomaster thing is because I don't think the sealant is latex like the conti which is much easier to clean for a tire repair shop...nway thanks for all the help guys

what?? really? so basically if i get a flat and i have the intention of repairing it, i should probably call BMW Assist or CAA rather than slime it??

Edit: found this FAQ that suggest otherwise

7. Once I repair the hole with AirMan, can I get it patched by a tire professional?

Yes, you can get your tire patched by any tire professional. Just let them know that you have sealed your tire with the AirMan system so that they are aware of the tire sealant inside. The sealant poses no danger to the tire professional, and there are no harmful gases or chemicals to deal with.

Canadian Tire has the Airman kit that's pretty much identical to the Conti one.. I bought the last one at Dufferin/Lawrence but there appears to be some in stock around the city. I was in that area, lucky me, because all the locations near home/work don't have it in stock. It's 50 bux.

yup, just went and picked up the airman...it looks exactly like the conti one other than few cosmetic differences... tire shops don't like working with the slime thing cuz it uses different chemical where as the Airman, conti and bmw ones use latex which is much easier to clean out...

I got the airman one too... I asked my tire guy about it.. he said he can patch it even after I fill it with the latex sealant... but he will charge me extra cause he has to pop the tire off the rim and clean out all that junk before inserting the patch... so roughly $60 to $90 to repair vs. the normal $10 patch job.

I guess normally they just insert a plug from outside the tire, hence the big price jump.

If you have 19" rfts anyways.. why don't you just carry one of those in your trunk as spare?

That's what I do in the winter (running non RFTs) when I'm going far for a ski trip or something.. just an added security blanket to my airman kit...

U can run 4 18s and one 19 wheel...isn't that really bad for the suspension...well the main reason is cuz we need luggage space for 4 ppl so i don't think its possible

well.. I figured if u used a compact spare (which is like 15" or 16"s) and running your 3 other wheels normal size (18s or 19s), it would be the same... probably really bad for long term use... but just to get u to a tire shop.. it should be ok...

but yea.. a 19" spare will kill any trunk space you have.. I'm in an e92 too and I can barely fit anything else after a set of golf clubs goes in there

I'm sure the airman kit will do you well man!

Good luck!

good find. weird cause ive personally heard cases from tire repair shops where they've refused to repair because of slime being used
