Why are prices only shared via PM?

I have been shopping around lately for wheels, tires, brakes, you name it. I wonder why vendors can not just post prices on their websites or in threads?

I like to plan things out for maybe months or even years in advance sometimes and I always feel like when I ask for a PM the vendor must think I am ready to buy or I am just jerking them around. It also is very inefficient for everyone involved.

So vendors ... why can't you just post prices for us?

Because most of the time (but not every time), the vendor that is saying "PM for pricing" is selling well below the manufacturer's minimum retail price, and is at risk of getting dropped as a dealer.

Every consumer is price conscious, and the vendors choosing to send rock bottom prices on a private message only basis are often (but not every time) leaving enough profit margin for an install and warehouse facility, stocked items, or a well paid, well trained service staff that can provide good after-sales support.

one price that is shared via PM is a price that they don't want to publicly share.
if they sell below invoice to one person they don't want to be obligated to sell to that same price to others.
-competition has a lot to do with it.
