so after ksfrogman said it was a silencer, i thought of making a diy to remove this thing.
So here it is.

Note: this was made with a simota air intake, if you want to know how to remove the oem air intake please see this tread http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30688

step 1:

Release all bolts shown in picture 1, and disconnect the air flow sensor.



Step 2:

After you have removed the air filter housing, you need to remove the air intake tube. pull it of in the direction shown in picture 2.



Step 3:

nou you need to cut off the silencer, you can't pull it off because it is glued on to the ait intake tube, cut it off as shown in picture 3.



Step 4:

after you cut off the silencer the you have to put in a plug so it is sealed off airtight, glue the edges off the plug and fit it in to the air intake tube as shown in picture 4 and 5.




after that the tube will look like this:





Step 5:

Now put everything back on the car, like you got it off and then the fun begins.

Results:

my car is now more agressive on the throttle, and the sound is louder and deeper.

i got the plug from my local shop here, thanks love the 332i LOL it is a little mod but you can really feel the difference on the throttle, it's more accurate

it is reversible but then you have to order a new tube

I'm sorry for the stupid question, but going by what's obvious (its name), is the silencer's ONLY purpse to silence the intake (i.e. from becoming too loud)? Or does it have any other purpose, specially since it looks so chunky ?

i thik it is 38 mm but i don't know for sure, i think it is also supposed to be as a little restriction

I did this on my last car (Ford Focus), and definetely noticed a more audible growl at higher RPMs.

OK so I was really bored and couldnt wait so I sawed it off without finding a plug first

So I sawed the resonator off and found a small plug in my garage.



I used a dremel to make the intake side flat. I used super glue to plug the hole.

As you can see, sort of a hack job



I used my air compressor to blow air through it to make sure no leaks. There was a little leakage so I used electrical tape just to finish everything off and seal it.

I might just buy a new 28 dollar pipe. I do feel a slight change in response - feels more accurate maybe? If your looking for sound, this isnt very noticable. Taking out the charcoal filter definitely added more sound and response.

I am confused about where to get the plug....autozone, something like that?

What do I ask for? "I need a 38mm plastic plug", are plugs like this common? What else are they used for?

does the air intake tube just pull off? does it require any screws removed? its really hard to see with those pics.

you have to unscrew one screw and then pull it of towards the headlights

So I'd like to do this, but I'm skeptical about the results. After watching your video, its hard for me to tell what's the silencer delete, and what's the quad exhaust. People that have done this with stock exhaust- what do you notice, anything? Is it worth it?

Cool. I'd be inclined to use silicone glue to make it air tight. It worked to waterproof joints on a JetSki. Your right thumb should get a purple heart medal.

ok so my car didnt start and it turns out that my plug fell out.

Be Careful guys, use the right plug and make sure it seals well. This time I used epoxy putty. Should stay in, but I think im going to order a new piece for the peace of mind.
