Dealers quoting invoice as $740 more than calculated

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster.

So after months of following up on the 3-series coupe I'm about to pull the trigger, and trying to keep it under $1500 over invoice. BUT, 3 different dealers here in SoCal quoted the invoice price as $740 over what I calculated on kbb.com and on the price list floating around online. (ie. for a 328i coupe with metallic paint, premium, sport, and steptronic, I calculated 38,585, but they say 39,325). I don't think I missed something during calculation since the msrp I calculate is the same as what they have for the different invoice price.

I thought the first dealer who quoted the $740 over invoice was trying to rip me off at first, but after the third one today...am I missing something? Does anyone know what that $740 is?

Invoice calculation (328 Coupe) from kbb.com:
Base w/ destination charge: 33,170
Steptronic: 1,210
Premium package: 2,865
Sport package: 910
Metallic paint: 430
Total: 38,585

Dealer's total invoice: 39,325
MSRP: 41,895

I've been quoted 40,825 (the dealer's invoice price + $1500), and about to go for it if I don't find out what the $740 is. Is this a good deal.

My first new car ever (graduating this month), so any help is much appreciated.

Destination + bank fee if I had to guess or a combo of other things. If you had the whole breakout of numbers/quotes it would be more helpful.

In SoCal, It's the MOCA (or something like that - basically an advertising fee) and a dealer training fee. Both are legitimately on the dealer invoice but not shown on edmunds or kbb, etc. Probably negotiable, but that's the diff.

Thanks for the info!

Do you happen to know if this fee just exists in SoCal or CA throughout?

Training Fee = $180 + MACO (BMW Dealer advertising fee) = $400-600 (est. i believe)

Exists everywhere, well certainly in the USA

Find another dealer my friend or do the trip up north and find a dealer from
there. Try phoning their internet sales guy up and get a nice quote.

From what I gather, there are 2 different invoice price. I learned that after I ordered.

1. True invoice - the price on e90post.com, edmunds.com, carpoint.com, etc.
2. Dealer invoice - the True Invoice plus MACO, training fee.

MACO is Market Co-Op advertising fee. Here at Northern California is $400 for 3 series.

Training Fee is $180.

When dealer shows you the Invoice, it add the Training fee to the base price of the car. In addition, toward the end of the price sheet they add MACO fee of $400.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the info everyone.

Strange, the dealers didn't tell me about the fees when I told them the invoice price I calculated.

You guys should be lucky!

Here in The Netherlands a plain 330i Coupe costs 53,150 Euro... which is around 70,800 USD. But there are no additional dealer costs.

Depending on your negotiation skills, you're able to get discount up to 8% over here.

But congratulations on your new car !
