Quattro vs X-Drive video
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...8466&q=quattro
I didn't expect Quattro to fail this test. Any thoughts why it couldn't transfer power to front wheels? |

I vaguely recall something about that in quattro the wheels have to have at least a little bit of resistance. In this case they had 0, which is a rare case

In the first vid, Newer xDrive on 5 Series.
In the second vid, older xDrive on 3 and X5. Would like to see new test as well; but all in all Audi's Quattro is one of the best AWD systems out there. |

You sure that Audi has quattro? Not all A6's are standard with quattro.

The reason the A8 didn't go anywhere in the first video is because there was zero (or close to zero) torque resistance from the rear wheels. The Torsen (Torque-sensing) center diff will dynamically and instantly transfer more torque to the axle that has greater torque resistance. However, when torque resistance on one side of the Torsen goes to zero, the Torsen acts like an open differential, resulting in what you saw in the video. I think that test is a little unfair, because 100% front traction and 0% rear traction is a pretty rare condition.
Also, I am not familiar with the xDrive, so I can't compare. |

I'd like to thanks Smythe and Noro for explanation. I read everything I could find on X-Drive but don't know enough about other systems like Quattro and 4-Matic.
