Mod or upgrade?
Hello everyone,
I have been a long time reader, but I don't post very often. I have been driving my 06' E90 for a while and am displeased with it's handling performance since I didn't get the sport package. I recently bought a used set of rims, but they need new tires. I am contemplating an upgrade to the suspension or saving for a different vehicle. The car currently has 72,000 miles, but it runs great. I wish it was a manual, but I don't mind the auto that much. I was talking to Chad at STS808 yesterday and he recommended the H&R Premium coil-overs, and I have been monitoring the traffic on the BMW performance suspension also. Both seem to be good options.... So, do you guys think I should save for a different car, or spend the 3k on new tires and upgraded suspension. I look forward to hearing from other 808 BMW owners. I would get a used set of coil-overs at with 72,000 miles + new tires. I switched from OEM tires 225/255 to 245/275 and noticed a huge increase in grip. I could turn at higher speeds and feel very very stable.
I would recommend a used set of coil-overs or even drop springs. No sense spending on new mods unless you plan to keep the car for at least 30-50k miles more...

I think it really depends on how displeased you really are with your current ride. If you're looking for performance (and you don't have an M), I would suggest really upgrading to that to see what it's all about. IF ANYTHING I suggest you go to BMW of Hono and take a test drive in an E90 M or E92 M.
If you already have an M, then I would consider upgrading the suspension. H&R are very good! I had a 323CI with the sports package but it didn't compare to what the FK (H&R) Coilovers provided when I installed them on the 323ci. It depends if it's only the suspension you're disliking, or the whole car. IMO i'd just save up for a new car because you'll be thinking about it even IF you decide to go with the H&R... |

Sorry, I should have specified that it's a 325i with the non sport suspension. Does that change anyone's viewpoint? I wouldn't mind purchasing a used set of coilovers, in good condition ofcourse.

Sounds like there are too many things you would have different - at 72k mi you should save up for something else more to your criteria.

If you are unhappy with the car now then I see no point in spending more money into it ... Trust me when I say this because I did all that I could to my old E90 328i and in the end I just old everything and got a ///M.

I agree. Get a solid base that you are happy with, don't try to revamp something you're no longer content with. It's all within your financial limits. At first I wanted the 135i, but I knew all I was going to do was try to make it better than the 335i. Then I wanted the 335i, but then I was going to try to outpoint the M3. I decided to get the M3 and I am very happy with the car (especially since it's paid off )

Very good point, but don't worry, I am fiscally conservative and careful with purchases.....as long as I don't test drive an M. Anyways, I think you guys are correct. I am going to upgrade the tires, give her a wash and put a few more miles on her. I may decide to upgrade the suspension, but probably won't unless a good deal smacks me in the face.

Hey guys,
I wanted to update everyone on what I decided to do. I went ahead and upgraded my wife with a new vehicle, so I don't feel so bad with the mods. I ordered the following from Eddie at **********s. -ST V1 coilovers -10 & 15mm spacers (already running 162 style 18" staggered) -LED rear blackout lights -Matte Black kidney grill I haven't received these yet, but I will be sure to update everyone once they are received/installed. I also ordered an OEM rear spoiler from ebay.... I decided to upgrade the tires and I ordered a set of Continental DWS from tirebuyer.com (free shipping to Hawaii for July). WOW, what a difference a good set of tires can make for your car. It drives better than it ever has before, but I am noticing the suspension is a bit soft now (softer sidewall), I'll fix that with the coilovers. It is VERY quiet now, I love my car again. I ended up repainting the center console with some vinyl paint because of the excessive wear and gave it a fresh waxing. It's amazing how much more you like your car after it's squeeky clean. I'll post pics later. Andre' |

Sounds nice but only a couple years til we see the f30 M3. I would have saved for a better base. In any case looking forward to seeing another modified BMW on the island. Congrats.

From all I've heard about the F30 M3 so far, it will be hitting US showrooms on mid-2014 as a 2015 model year, which is about twice as far away as you are indicating here. If it was out in two years, that would mean BMW shaved 2 whole years off of the established lifecycle.
