Engine temperature

This may sound like a crazy question but I acnnot see on my E90 335D the engine temperature! How do I tell when it is up to normal temperature? My Dads 535D has orange bars which run around the outside of the tacho to tell you when the engine is cold but mine doesnt, am I missing something obvious?
