Windshield crack :(
So a rock hit my car two nights ago while I was going 80mph and caused a six to seven inch, curved crack in my front windshield.
I went to safelite and they said the crack was too long to fix so I called my dealership. They told me that I have to replace not just my windshield but my rearview mirror as well?? Does that seem normal? And does anyone know how much something like this is gonna probably cost me? Can I order parts on Tischer and give it to my dealer (to save me a couple hundred bucks)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Glass is covered under the comprehensive portion of your insurance. A glass claim will not affect your rates or your "good driver" rating.
The mirror does not need to be replaced, but you need to get the correct windshield with the proper mount for the mirror. It'll cost you your deductible no matter where you take it so let the dealer do it - that way you know who to yell at when there is a problem. |

Thanks!
I had no idea about glass claims not affecting your insurance. Awesome, I'm gonna give my state farm guy a call tomorrow.

Comp is stuff that isn't your fault - glass, deer strikes, fire, theft, that sort of stuff, while collision protects you from stuff that is your fault - primarily hitting stuff. Problems come up with incidents like hit and run. Unless you can prove that it was hit-and-run (not your fault, ergo comp) then it falls under collision (you might have hit something and blamed it on a hit-n-run.) There are also differences based on state law (some states are "no-fault" [aka everybody-at-fault] laws that screw the innocent driver) and glass coverage may vary based on state law as well. |

My dealers quoting me a little over 1600 bucks to replace the windshield.
800+ for the windshield 800+ for labor Does this sound reasonable? I've called three other dealers and they've quoted prices from 416 to 476 for the windshield (476 at my dealer). Is my SA overcharging me?

That's between them and your insurance company. You pay the deductible and move on.
But yes, way expensive. Dealers outsource the install and a typical install should cost about $200-$300 plus the parts. |

Nope, it all happened so fast. First thing I did after checking my face was pull over.

Some places will make you pay for the windshield up front, and then you get the money back from your insurance (i.e. my BMW dealer), while others will send the bill straight to your insurance company. |

Get a new one from Safelite man, I paid around $330 installed in my garage. The guy was fast and the work was done ~1.5 hours.
Don't bother going to the dealer man, they charge crazy for simple jobs like replacing windshields. Even Safelite only charges $550 for OEM ones installed.

I had Safelite try to install a windshield in my S6. Three times they ordered the wrong windshield. Each time was a different installer. The first one cut my A pillar trim when removing the windshield. The ordered windshield was for a A6. The second guy knocked over a mug of grape juice I had in the cupholder (I had said to him "let me move that cup" and he said "don't bother, I won't get close to it") and that windshield was for an A6 4.2 - the third guy just said "this is probably the wrong windshield but I'll install it if you want." I took it to Audi where they ordered the glass. Their installer broke the mirror cap (the little plastic cap that covers the wires) but ordered a new one without me asking. Because of the issues with the Safelite people, Audi even gave me a loaner for the time the car was in the shop. All I ended up paying for was the deductible - but it took weeks to sort out the issue with the A pillar trim. Taking it to the dealer is one-stop-shopping. If something goes wrong there is no question of who is at fault and the dealer will sort it out. The dealer also shouldn't be asking for money upfront - they should be dealing directly with insurance. They should just collect your deductible. |

Just had my windshield replaced today. Insurance is Liberty Mutual. Deductable is $100, and they said this claim won't affect my insurance as they don't count windshields against your policy (this is the third windshield I've had replaced in a year, but first on this car, and my rates haven't gone up).
Went to Safelite and asked for the OEM glass ("green" w/green tint at top). safelite called my insurance co. and got approval for the windshield. I believe they had to replace condensation sensor as well. I'll pick it up after work and see what kind of job they did. |

A week or so ago a porsche cayman did a typical 3 lane change at over 100 MPH.
In his efforts he managed to go into the shoulder kicking up debris and a piece of asphalt kicked up into my windshield chipping it. I had it repaired.... it looks better but is still there. Ive owned 8 cars, this is my first chip. I'm very persistent in NOT tailigating to avoid chips and the like, of course this scenario I had no choice as he came from my blindspot and cut me off. |

Nope - All glass claims fall under comprehensive. No comp claim can affect your rates.
Another tidbit. Check with your insurance company about reducing your comp deductible. You might find that a lower deductible on the comp side only results in a minimal increase in premiums (the collision side is where a higher deductible will save you lots of money) |
