Plastic 'emergency' car key

Who on here has lost theirs ? Like a fool I 'misplaced' mine sometime between the first and second day of owning my car.

Gave up searching for it after a few hours and removed the key fob from the glove box just incase.

I was really annoyed because when the dealer handed over the plastic key, I made a mental note not to lose it

Whats the point of the plastic key anyway? I though it was only a valet parking thing (i.e. no use in the UK at all)

Presumably you know that there is a pull out emergency key in the key fobs as well?

The concept is that the plastic key should be with you at all times. In the event you lose the key/fob out somewhere, you can still access your car and drive home. The plastic key opens your driver's door. Insert said plastic key into the emergency use fob located in your glovebox and you have a functioning fob that can be used to start your car, to get you home.

But in reality, the key is still too bulky to stash away in your wallet. Case in point mine is lying around the house somewhere

Fyi the pull out steel key in your fob is for valet purposes. Let's say you need to valet your car, you could lock out your trunk/boot via the button in your glovebox, lock the glovebox and remove the metal key before handing your empty fob to the valet attendant. That way your belongings is safe(r). Technically you could stash your metal key in a seperate location if you expect to lose the fob, and use said metal key in place of the plastic key.

I thought it was the other way - in fact it WAS the other way with my e60 which had a plastic valet key and a 'proper' key with the door unlock buttons.

My emergency key is at home - with the spare key fob

Yep, it came with my dealer pack when I collected the car. Its small and thin and you slot it in the fob in your glovebox in emergencies.

is it not just the E90 that has the emergency key and spare fob thing in the glovebox?

Complimentary plastic keys/emergency fobs were taken, MY2007 onwards. A feeble attempt on the part of BMW NA to compensate us MY06 325i/330i owners...

do dealers sell the plastic spare keys for your car? this is better way than paying £150+ plus for spare key just incase doors lock and leave keys in them!

It's about £40 all in for a replacement, assuming you still have the shell in the glovebox.

Not any help on the plastic key but what is this emergency fob in the glovebox? I've never heard nor seen one, not that I've looked in my glovebox.

Has anyone got a picture of the emergency fob?

Thanks

I just bought a used 2011 335is that only came with one key. I mentioned the extra plastic key at the dealer and they said there wasn't one. Do they still do them or did they in 2011?

The plastic key doesnt start the car, but can be used to get inside it if key is lost i suppose. So dealer said its pretty useless.

I'm am going to look in my glovebox to see if it might be there.

The plastic key gets you in the car. Putting that key in to the emergency fob starts the car. They are a pair.
