Please talk me out of buying a Mustang vs. 335is

Argh...I know I am going to get one-sided responses on this forum, but I am having a really hard time not choosing the Mustang. It's got gobs of V8 power all over the RPM range, a very precise short shifter, and is a really nice highway cruiser. The interior is very welcoming and the SYNC system works wonderfully with my iPhone. It even handles pretty damn well with snappy turn-in and a very solid, well-built feel to it.

But then I step out of the car and I look at it and I just think "Sh*t...it's a Mustang". It's not a great-looking car, and the Mustang stigma seems hard for me to get over, and I'm a guy who owned a Corvette (for a few days - long story).

So that leads me back to the 335is. Which has all the style and technology parts covered. And it's a proven snow performer whereas the Mustang, I'm not sure what I'll do when the snow comes.

The price of the Mustang is $20k LOWER as the 335is (as I've configured both of them). And, around a racetrack, the Mustang is undeniably the faster, more athletic car. So even considering the 335is makes me feel like a douche, choosing style over substance. Put it this way: 335is lease payments are higher than what I can purchase the Mustang for.

But...it's a fricking Mustang.

Can someone slap me across the face and tell me I'm stupid for even considering the Mustang?

umm...If you can get over the fact that it's not even a comparison from a styling and fit/finish comparison, get the Mustang. 20k is no joke.

I wish the fit & finish were as piss-poor as I expected them to be, it would make the decision easier! The fit and finish is actually pretty good...every bit as good as what I'd find in a Mazda, Nissan, etc. It's not BMW good, but it's not Chevy Cobalt either....

arghh

How do you like your car so far?

Yes, I would immediately have it lowered to eliminate wheel gap.

With the 335is, I would immediately throw a Procede v4 on it.

Stop asking the opinion of others. Test drive both and whatever you like, choose it YOURSELF. Only you can decide what fits you. If you're indecisive, you should probably stick to a Corolla.

drop 2k in mods (engine) and you're running 11's and 10's...

Id definitely go with the mustang. It looks better than ever IMO its getting good MPG while putting out good power. The v8 is unbelievable. "still a mustang?" This is a new generation for the mustang class, its not your old piss poor pos.

American Cars are getting better, atleast if shit breaks, they will fix it correctly. Unlike fuel pump and random annoyance with bmw.

The new v8 mustang is starting to make my friend save up for a chip for his GTR, because he knows he will start losing to them.

Your Call bud.

I just can't go for the American iron any more...I've had too many bad experiences with them and too many good ones with the German- and Japanese-built cars (more of the former than the latter). Ford is ahead of GM and Chrysler, but the American "sports/muscle" cars are all getting too heavy and the bean-counters are forcing too many shortcuts and compromises. Besides...even with the $20K lower price, it's still way too much for a Ford or Chevy. I prefer buying CPO BMWs, which lowers the gap some, but it all comes down to "you don't get what you don't pay for". All depends on what you're looking for. The 335 was never meant to be a street-racer ponycar...the Mustang was never meant to be an upscale GT kind of car. But after hearing a friend talk about his Mustang Cobra and the grief that his dealer gave him, I'd be leery until I read some sort of long-term test results, etc.

And so what if you're running 11's and 10's? That only appeals to a narrow group of people. If all you want is a drag/track car, by all means, get the Mustang with the drivetrain built to withstand the punishment. But when something breaks from the abuse, you have to wonder how the dealer/manufacturer will treat you, knowing that you're racing it...

On a side note, Ford is offering a factory supercharger that will bring hp to almost 600 at the wheels. ALL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY!!

When you sat inside the Mustang... do you feel complete? relax? contented? or is something bothering you?....

When you sat inside the BMW do you feel complete? do you feel this is me? do you feel satisfied?....

Go where your heart is... or else you wont be happy later on...

I say go for the BMW.... Mustang is a great car only if it is a 67 classic fastback (Gone in 60 seconds type)...

Peace!

I suppose I should add that I will only be keeping either of these cars for a maximum of 3 years so maintenance is not something I'm too worried about.

FWIW, this is what the Mustang would look like if I bought one. (Brembo pkg + Eibachs)
