Black Piece above windshield cracking
Hey, So ive been noticing that there are tons of little cracks on the black piece of trim above the front wiendshield, which is half on the window, half on the body of the car. This is forward of the Sunroof. I was wondering if it is normal for an 06, and if it is not, then how can i repair it?
No warranty. Thanks! |

You're talking about the trim? It's common if you let your car bake in the sun...it's plastic/rubber after all. Pretty sure you can get it replaced, but might have to go to a windshield company

Apply some 303 Aerospace on it to help stop the cracking, won't fix it but will prolong it.

it is a common problem for our car I was told by a BMW associate. If your car is still under warranty, the dealer will replace them free. Had mine done about a month ago. Funny how the same trim on my 13 yrs old Toyota is fine and I abuse it much more than the BMW.

I had same issue, BMW swapped mine and then repositioned the windshield saying it was not put in properly at the factory.
Who knows if it was or wasnt but it was free, since it was b4 my warranty ran out.

I have an 06/05 buuild and no cracks in my seal.
IIRC, it's not even glued in, friction fit. Should be an easy DIY. However don't hold me to that. Look here for the part: www.realoem.com |

DIY??
Anyone know if this is a DIY type item? I took my car to the local windshiled repair shop, and they are quoting me worst case scenario $350 and best case $50. The difference in cost they say is having to take the windshield out. IF they break the glass taking the windshield out, it would cost more. I'm not sure they do many BMW's so, makes me wonder if the windshield even has to come out.

Replaced that piece myself guys, no need to get raped by dealer. I did a search some time back here and found some tips for R & I for reveal molding in question. Took me about 25 minutes and that included clean up as well.
First thing you have to do is peel off your old molding; you will need to gain access to a side thats lifted or peeling away; the molding is set two-fold: pressure fit (lower glass edge part) and adhesive (upper roof line part). Once you are able to gain leverage on the underside of molding the strip will peel off very easily. And will definitely leave a mess of adhesive and molding shards at the same time. The cleanup is what takes the most time of this task. Now once you've cleaned up, you can install you brand new trim...Look carefully at old and new strip and you will see exactly how the install will progress. The molding has a peel-off type adhesive that ultimately adheres to the roof area above windshield (DO NOT REMOVE UNTIL MOLDING SET IN). The molding itself is just pressure-fit to the glass and has some sort of metal cased channel that wraps around the glass edge...Start from one end and keep pushing/pressing in until entire molding sits flush w windshield (Spray a scant amount of WD40 or lubricant of choice inside the molding channel; this will help greatly w install. The last end will be hard to press in but with enough balanced force it will just pop in. Be careful to only get lubricant inside molding channel and not on other parts or you will not have a good seal when you remove the adhesive strip at the end. After its set in, you can peel off the roof adhesive strip and firmly press along roof line for molding to stick permanently. Good luck w task OP.

One warning, DO NOT use a screw driver or anything metalic to pry the old moulding from the channel. the windshield can be cracked very easily. |
