Wastegate rattle not covered by warranty?

My wastegates are rattling

Enough to hear that butterfly like flutter as rev's drop.

Dealership says its within spec, what has your experience been with this? Shouldn't the turbos be replaced?

It may not be bad enough. Mine were rattling pretty bad and they replaced them. 2 weeks later they were rattling again but a lot less than before. Its been about 3 months and it hasn't gotten worse since.

I went for wastegate rattle (didnt even know that the most noise was coming from exhaust valve and not wastegates), but they ended up replacing turbos anyway. exhaust valve was still rattling and they said its normal.....so i just disconnected it. no point to argue with them here.

I'm taking mine in next week for the same issue. I'll report back my experience. Bakeme521, Kolyan2k, or anyone else, how long was your car in the shop?

I had part #-
-11 65 7 585 746 acutator
-11 65 7 585 745 acutator

installed for my waste gate rattles along with a few other parts.
I still hear my waste gate rattles but its not as bad as it was. Im sure my next visit will be my turbos or Fuel pumps being replaced..

Hope that lil bit helps

For wastegates......its a 3 step procedure.

1. Software update, if not fixed > 2. Replace wastegate actuators, if not fixed > 3. Replace turbos

Sometimes they do one thing and give you the car back with the rattle and you have to come back another 1-2 times. Mine got done without coming back in 2 weeks. My car had another problem as I was told, my ECU was never updated before since 2007 and to bring it up to date its not that easy, each module in ECU had to be updated separately, this took them like 2-3 days I think. Usually software updates take 1-2 days max.

Also my car was not touched for the first day......

EDIT: also make sure if your car falls under the "turbo lag" with new software, they do it right away so that you dont have to come back yet another time.

WTF does within spec mean? A certain decibel level? Is it an irritating rattle or is it not irritating?

Question wastegate actuators

All of the wastegate symptoms and indications that I've seen on here, and also bimmerfest.com, match my car's symptoms perfectly, but when I brought it in, they said it's just "exhaust valves", and there is some "spring loose". I said "wastegates, or wastegate actuators?" and they said "no, exhaust valves". The guy I talked to was not a mechanic, he was only relaying information to me, but is it possible that the noise is indeed the wastegates and they are trying to hide it? They had to order parts, and my car is scheduled to go in this friday 17 SEP 2010. It is still under warranty. Any thoughts guys?

That sounds like nonsense, they should at least tell you that you are within spec for wastegate rattle, esp if you told them straight it was wastegates.

read my post. before pissing away your time with dealer, disconnect the exhaust valve and see if rattle is still there (takes 5 seconds). for MANY people this fixes their "wastegates" rattle.

If you are concerned about the valve being disconnected, then have the dealer fix it, but it pretty much doesnt do anything.....its there to warm up the cats in the morning.

Kolyan,

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I read each of your posts on this thread, but I don't know how to "disconnect the exhaust valve". I would hate to do a search for this, find a procedure, only to find out it wasn't the one you were talking about. If this is indeed the fix, wouldn't the dealer know to try it? They had it in the shop for a whole day and ended up ordering "parts", so it makes me think it wasn't a quick fix. I'll give your method a try, as long as it's not harmful or will produce codes.

If it isn't obvious, I'm a new BMW owner, so bear with me. I am on BMW ownership day 9....Loving it.

i took my car for wastegates and pointed out to the rattle when idling and to rattle when driving (which turned out to be exhaust valve). 2 weeks later got my turbos replaced and idling rattle was gone, but rattle while driving was still present. i disconnected the exhaust valve and never looked back.....of course i can go and complain about it as well and maybe they will end up fixing it in another day or two, but i prefer not to waste my time. ps. idling rattle was when you push accelerator while standing in Neutral

EDIT: if you are bringing car to dealer anyway....why worry now. maybe they ordered that exhaust valve and will replace it for you.....especially if they did tell you that its the valve. it takes 10 secs to troubleshoot and maybe another 30 min to replace it. its a very minor issue considering that you dont even need that valve to begin with.

^ this might throw a hidden code (not displayed on dash) because its a very minor thing, but there is nothing to really worry about. Once you plug it back in, it will be ok. If you really worry about the code (i wouldnt) then search "golf tee mod", also easy, but i prefer just disconnecting the connector.

I just got my car back after being at the dealership for two weeks with the issue. They first did the software update, didn't fix it. Then replace the actuators, didn't fix it. Then replaced the turbochargers and I got it back today.

Hey guys, new here, just picked up my '07 335i sedan, Montego Blue on Tan/Poplar, 6-spd sedan about a week ago. I absolutly LOVE this car. What a beast! Anyway, looked up the service records and NO HPFP issues YET (knock on wood).

Strange rattling coming off a rev though, and sure enough, they said it was the wastegates. As soon as they heard it they didn't even hesitate, said its the wastegates and that I will need two new turbos. Dropped the car off this morning to take care of this, get an oil change and hook up my sirius tuner. They said they will have to go through the steps with submitting a puma, software update > troubleshooting > replace turbos. They never mentioned replacing the actuators, just that they would most likely be replacing the whole assemblies. I will gladly take two new turbos for free! My warranty is up in July so I see this as a very good thing. Gonna be without the car for about a week though if they have to do the whole replacement...

On a side note, the only thing I've done to the car is the DAEOS angel eye harness, threw the whole thing into the ECU box... they should be kinda surprised when they go in there... Ive read this is usually a non-issue though, correct?

When I went talk to my SA, I had asked him point blank "have you heard or had similar situation or problems with the wastegates before? He replied, "Yeah I've had heard about it. Let's schedule you an appointment." I go in next Thursday.

Last year I had the same issue with my Evo, found out it was the wastegate flapper broke (Chipped) and was not sealing completely. A quick remedy I did to fix the problem was to put a little more preload on the wastegate by turning the turnbuckle on the wastegate arm, This got me by until the new turbo came in. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have pic of the hotside of turbo showing the wastegate flapper?
