Can you choose what type of loaner vehicle you want to drive?

Just picked up a loaner this morning, and was wondering if it's possible to request a certain type of loaner vehicle, rather than just accept the base 3-series they always seem to give you?

Most dealers only have 3-series in their loaner fleet. You cant just pick out any car on the lot. Loaner cars are insured for rental purposes, in-stock vehicles are only covered by dealers insurance for employees to drive.

I would be happy with a 3-series. I usually get a Camry.

While I'm sure the insurance is different for the different types of vehicles, the insurance for "in stock" vehicles must cover non-employees somehow. Every test drive I've been on constituted a scan of my license and tossing me the keys - no insurance check, nothing. Should the worst happen, these vehicles must be covered in some way, and they sure as hell never checked for my insurance (interestingly, for loaners, they do).

Either way - it isn't unheard of to be given a non-designated loaner while your car is in service, depends on your relationship with the dealer most likely

Yes, I always ask for a 335 and they almost always have one available for me.

I typically get 328s no sport, which is ok, I cant complain, they used to be hertz before, and then camrys after that. But they have really cool loaners, but luck of the draw I dont seem to get those. The other day I saw a tiag 335 coupe with sport was lined up as the first car for the next morning. What a surprise the first customer that day was gonna get.

I always ask whats available and usually get something pretty nice. I've had a 550I, x5, x3 and I've got a z4 35i right now. This is probably the 1st time I'm happy there taking there sweet time working on my car. The Z is a blast and I love the exhaust note on it.

We must get our cars serviced at the same place. My list of service loaners over the years goes something like this:

- X5 35d
- X6 35
- 760
- 550 (E60)
- 135 convertible
- Z4M roadster
- 335 coupe
- Z4 3.0
- 535xi

I always try to get the 550 if there is one available

That's pretty standard practice at BMW Dealerships.

I go to a different dealer from where the car was bought and I get a loaner if I need one; usually it's the same as my car.

There was a guy here who was getting his 335 serviced for like the 2nd or 3rd time for hpfp and they gave him a 335 loaner, which had an hpfp failure right after he drove it off the lot.

I'm gonna see if I can start asking...I've only gotten an E90 328, E90 328w/ sport package, and E92 335...good cars in their own right but I drive a 3 series everyday, wouldn't mind switching it up every now and again

Haha yea, that was RagingClue, I'm pretty sure the dealer was Bill Jacobs in Naperville - there are horror stories about them but he insisted they were the easiest to get a new HPFP...he got banned though

I typically get a 328xi or 335xi. Only once did I get a 535xi. It seems the entire loaner fleet has x-Drive, which is understandble in the midwest. I believe they also have SAV's, and try to match you with something similar to what you drive.

I keep asking for the M6, but it hasn't happened yet.... they just smirk and respond, "Yea right."

If you didn't buy the car from them, they charge you something like $30/day for the loaner.

What dealer is that?

I've never been charged for a loaner, even at the dealer that I didn't buy the car from.

I believe if you have a good relationship with your SA you would be able to get some preferential treatement as far as what loaner you can get. If you call ahead of time I'm sure you can request a certain vehicle but there may not be any gaurantee. In the past I've gotten e90s, e92s, and an X3. The coolest car would have been one my most recent times when they gave me a e90 335 diesel. That was a fun car to drive for the weekend
