Do you guys think is worth to renew my maintenance warranty. I bought the car with 30k miles now it has almost 40k. BMW wants 2100 to renew it.

if you expect to pay more than 2100 in the maintenance period, then renew..

This is my first bimmer so after 40k I wouldn't know what to expect, or how expensive it gets. I'm gonna ask how long 2100$ will cover me for! The do the math!!
Thank u! |

I am in your similar situation. Bought a 2007 328i at 30k miles, with maintenance expiring. If you don't plan on putting a lot of miles on the car, don't renew it. That's my 2 cents.

I would pass. Brakes, oil service, wiper blades etc. It won't add up to $2100 imo. For brakes, the dealer only changed the pads, not the rotors, sensors, etc. I could have bought pads for $60 and replace them myself

For a maintanence plan, it's not worth it. You'll get 3 oil changes and 1 set of brakes (all together about $800 - $1,000 at an indy shop). If you have a clutch, it should go far past 100K, unless you abuse it; which BMW wouldn't cover anyway. A clutch job at an indy should be less than $1,000 (unless the flywheel is damaged). Get a scan tool for $300 to clear trouble codes.
Now an extended warranty my be something to consider. Being that the only expensive thing that goes on a 335i is the HPFP and that's covered under the fuel pump warranty to 120K (now?) you need to decide how much you can self-insure yourself. $2,100 will buy a lot of repairs, or cover a rear large repair like an AC compressor (my car). BMW's warranty plan is only good to 100,000 miles anyway, so if you plan on keeping your car past 100,000 miles I'd save the money and keep it for post-100K repairs (that's when they start to show up anyway). Any car will go 100,000 miles with minimum maintenance. But then there are the turbos... The waste-gates seem to get noisy. Last edited by ENINTY; 09-26-2010 at 08:01 AM.. |

Routine car maintenance such as fluid/filter changes and replacing brake rotors/pads are relatively easy jobs to do it yourself (DIY). I suggest you spend $80 on a Bentley Service Manual for the 2006-2009 BMW 3 Series (E90,91,92,93), buy the parts (and tools) you need for the job(s), and DIY. You'll learn more about your car, know the job is done right (with the best parts available), and save money too. You just have to find a little free time to do it.

absolutely NOT, unless you live in a hinterland where BMW dealer is the only half pitted brain mechanic that can repair your car... As your model year ages, there are more more mechanics who understands the intricacies of bimmer. Las Vegas is a pretty cosmopolitan town, you won't have difficult in getting a reliable auto shop. When my 2002 e46's front suspension's rubber bushing rotted out, it was superbly re-built by a local auto shop, using all OEM parts at one third labor cost. The best BMW engine specialists are private guys not dealer mechanics. A reliable auto shop, with proper German diagnostic tools and who understands the factory codes will render you good service.

OP: If you don't DIY and don't have a good INDY then buy the maintenance plan.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

My point is: my 2002 e46 service under warranty by the dealer was good, but as it got older it seems that the dealer lost interest, and every time anything was done, I had to bring it back for follow up. As my vehicle aged, I was able to get comparable service by independent auto shops which did not object in using OEM parts which I had got from internet, all this at substantially lower in cost compared to a BMW dealership. Remember that any substantial work, such as collision repairs, major engine re-built requiring machining, straitening of a unit body, rotor turning, they are all done by independent shops not by BMW dealerships.

This is a question of insurance......an over/under. Will you spend more that $2100 over the number of years of coverage based on the first 4 years or not? If the car has been solid I would not spend the money.

I have an '06 330i. I pondered the same question around the same mileage. I did not get the warrenty. With 86K I have only paid for (done myself) routine maintence. Yet I do need my rear defroster fixed. I don't know enough about that system to repair. So I would say I'm out about $250 in oil and all filters and brake fluid so far. Add the rear defrost and it would be about $500 in 3 years.

Right. Keep in mind extended maintenance IS NOT an extended warranty. Two different things.
