1st oil change and a question.

Bought this car last week with 53,300 miles and decided to change the oil with Mobile1 5W30 just so I could feel better that the car has fresh oil even though it wasn't due.

The only problems doing the change was having to jack the car up with my floor jack to get the ramps under the wheels because the bottom of the front skirt would hit the ramps, and the idiot @ my local European Auto Mechanic shop sold me the wrong filter. Ended up going up to Advanced Auto and bought a Purolator filter that they had since these were the only folks that had one on a Sunday.

My question is this,......I reset the oil reminder light (whatever you call it) and it changed the date to 6-11-2011 and the mileage shows 13000 now. Is there any way for me to change those parameters, like taking the mileage to 5000 and the date to 6 months, or am I stuck with what it reset too ?

Yea,..........I knew how, but was wondering if others were doing something differently then jacking it up first,......ie; rolling up on wood.

Get your oil and filter as a kit from Tischer BMW (getBMWparts.com). They'll have it to you in a day. BTW Mobil 1 is not a BMW certified oil.

DON'T use Mobil 1 5w30 oil. It is not BMW approved. You CAN use Mobil 1 0w40 which is.

It says in the manual,..........Mobile1 5W30 ! There is NO difference between the BMW 5W30 and the Mobile1 5W30 in reference to weight. Trust me,....the engine, lifters, cams, and rods will NEVER no the difference between Mobile1 5W30 or the 0W40 stuff.

Also,......I wont be doing that BMW recommended 15K oil change so the LL-01 rating that everyone is hung up on wont matter to me. I'll be changing every 5K.

There have been many discussions on this.

From BMW's website: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx

Granted they are referring more to the "top off" if you need to add a quart. However, if they are recommending a LL-01 approved oil for only a quart, it stands to reason that if you are going to change out all the oil to do so with either BMW's labeled 5w30 or an oil such as Mobil 1 0w40.

If you are under any BMW extended warranty (i.e. CPO) and an engine problem arises, and they test your oil, you are giving them a reason to deny warranty service by claiming that you used a non-approved oil. That being said, it's your car.

Actually,........I just went out to get my manual and they also recommend Mobile1 5W40 besides the M1 5W30. If I have any issues with my engine during my CPO warranty then I will REQUEST an oil analysis, and will be patiently waiting for any dummies from BMW that wanna tell me I'm not covered. LOL,......I have no problems going to court.

Well now, given the OP's attitude, he won't want to hear that the filter he used was crap too.

And I can guarantee that Mobile 5w30 isn't approved.

Aside from there being no Mobile oil at all, the approved oils are:

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:

* Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30

* Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40

* Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30

* Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

This is a European car. In Europe you can buy versions of Mobil 1 5W-30 and 5W-40 that are LongLife 01 approved. You can not buy such oils in the United States. But wherever you are, the car needs oil that meets BMW LongLife 01 or 04 standards. Such oils will have these approvals in small print on the back of the bottle. It is that simple.

There is a great deal more to oil than SAE viscosity numbers.

But do what you want.

The filter wasn't my first choice that's for sure, but when an idiot gives you the wrong filter and you've already dumped the oil then you do what you gotta do when everything is closed. I will say this,.....when I removed the filter from the box I was greeted with the writing on the filter,......"MADE IN GERMANY". The filter looked just like the mann filter except for the size. It wouldn't be the first time that a company just repackages a so-called "good" filter.

My manual says M1 5W30. It doesn't have a disclaimer that says only European M1 5W30. Your getting the M1 0W40 weight from the M1 website. Mobile 1 is NOT BMW. Someone please show facts as to M1 5W30 NOT considered usable for my car. Not what you think,.......FACTS !

I agree.

Did any of you give thought to BMW - "buy only approved BMW products so we can get some more money out of you"...?

In some cases I would agree that would be wise. In this case many oils are virtually identical in almost every regard - of course when proper comparison is made... syn vs. syn, dino vs dino - high end brand vs. high end brand. And in this case I would say that Mobil 1 5w-30 is an oil which may be used in our vehicles. Mobil 1 and many others (Redline, etc.) are highly recommended for today's high-tech engines and the n54 is no exception.

Do you have a grey market car? There is no BMW manual in world for an E90 which spec's Mobil 1 5w-30. Maybe M1 5w-30 ESP, but that oil is limited for only a few countries in Western Europe.

Oh and yes you're stuck with what the CBC states.

You have a 2006 car and, I assume, a 2006 manual. So do I. It is wrong, which is what lead BMW to put this up:

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx

For one thing, and it is just one thing of many, Mobil 1 5W-30, as sold in the United States, has an HTHS of only 3.09 while BMW LL01 requires > 3.5. There are other more important issues, but this one is a simple number that anyone can comprehend.

Now if you you come across Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP, which is what is sold in Europe, that is a different thing. But it is hard to find in the United States.

Again, this is a simple thing. BMW has an oil standard (as do all of the European car manufacturers). It is a high standard. Oils that meet it will say so on the back of the bottle. If they do not list it then they do not meet it. In this case Mobil 1 5W-30 does not list it, Mobil 1 0W-40 does list it.
