I'm never able to cram more than 6 quarts in it, and it always takes about 10 miles of driving for the "digital dipstick" to give me a reading.
Also - JACK STANDS Not to get the oil nerds going, but what oil will you be using? |

+1 to both of these. I start with 6 quarts too and then check what the "dipstick" says I need from there. Can't stress jack stands and safety enough when you crawl under you car.

Good point, a lot of people get killed under vehicles by hoping weak supports will hold the car.

Yes. The underbody panels get in the way of most of the other good spots.

I just did my first oil change on my own...
Make sure the car is well supported and also make sure you have a really good (large opening) recipient to catch the oil (I spilled quite a bit). Make sure the oil temperature is below a reasonable value like 50 celsius (you don't want to get your hands burnt, even wearing gloves). After letting the oil drip for at least 30 minutes, put EXACTLY 6.5 quarts of oil. Save the remaining half for later top up (I have never needed to top up). If you don't have a special oil cap socket and torque wrench (mine arrived after I changed the oil ), and are using an universal oil cap wrench, you will have no way of knowing how much to tighten the cap. So before unscrewing the oil filter cap, note the position of the text on the cap, so when you screw the cap back you know how much to tighen (until the text is in the same position as before). I have also managed to reset the oil change interval. If you need to do it, I will post the procedure.

Funny thing about the sensor, its far from accurate. I put 5 quarts in once and it said Max Full. So I wouldn't always trust the sensor. ...try to trust 6.5quarts.

up the low-profile ramps.........i usually let it drain for about 1/2 hour......
removed the filter........and sucked all excess oil out with a baby booger sucker........ 7 quarts is what i've been using for the last 14 oil changed.......and the sensor is always 3/4 full lifetime

wow, just posted a 15 step procedure for you and it kicked me off.... to log in and erased it. too bad I had some good stuff in there too. PM me if you want all the secreats I had planned to share. It will make life easier for you in the future and assure you the best protection when it time to restart your car for the first time after you change the oil.

Why mess with jackstands fellas? Use ramps...they're quick and safe. I always add 7qts and it remains full until next interval.

Does the oil drain plug point to the back? If it does, it would get most oil out if you put the car on ramps. If it drains straight out, you should level the car to get all the oil out.

*Not trying to jack this thread, just figured I could borrow it and not have to create a new one on oil changing posts when you have one already on here*
Hey guys, I want to do the oil change on my car (2007 335i sedan), I have done some research on the forums, so far this is what I will be needing 1. 6.5 quarts of synthetic oil * (Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30,Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40, Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30, Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30, as these are the ones approved by BMW USA.) 2. 2 O-Rings for the filter assembly unit, and one washer for the drain plug. (do these really need to be replaced with every oil change?) 3. 1 Oil Filter Now that I mentioned the needed parts for the process which is pretty simple, my concern is which oil has given the best results to you guys, and also did you purchase all the parts right of the dealer or can these parts just be purchased at your regular "Auto Zone" or "Advance Auto Parts" stores? PS. I have cpo warrantly on the car which is why I want to use something approved by BMW, In case I take it in for a reason and they give me any bs on it sense I did it myself. |
