E60 M5 VS E92 M3

So I go and really look @ the M6 coupe a week ago and it's not that attractive to me lol. First of all its almost identical to an 645 (yes i know its souped up 6 series duh!) and it doesn't really look too aggressive. On the other hand, the M5 looks monstrous and i hear it has better handling not to mention a 85K price tag compared to the 125K marked up M6.

Now im debating between the M3 and the M5, i just wanna find out if the M3 will be faster than the M5. If so, i won't go waste my money on it but then again i duno if i can wait over a year. Somebody help me im losing my mind.

If history repeats itself, which in all probability it will, the M3 will be able to hang with the M5 until 60-100 or so where the M5 will pull away. On the back roads, the M3 will be a much more satisfying drive, due to it's lighther weight and better handling.

most likely m3 will not be faster then the m5. altho its a lighter car, the m5 will likely have 100 hp over it.

if speed is your main concern, then go for m5. but if i were you, i would wait for the m3 to come out and try it out. theres more to a car then how much HP or how fast its 0-60 is

But in my shoes..

Trust me i try not to look @ 0-60 too much, i mean the M5 has superb handling and it still rapes after 100mph but 0-60 matters when im tryin' to hang with my brothers F430. Everyone around me are drivin' 4.0 0-60 vehicles  so im just tryin' to keep up. If i was all about speed i'd hop into a CRX and put 10grand into and make it a 10 second car lolz

If BMW comes with a 450hp M3 it would be more than enough to keep up with the new M5 if not beat it.

There is no point comparing something that doesn't exist right now. It will just be speculation and no actual facts. If markup is going to hold you back you might want to wait awhile. The M3 is a popular car there is going to be MARKUPED, guarented, for the first year. At hot spots, Santa Monica, the dealer had markup on the M3 2-3 years after its release. Personally, I'd wait a year before buying first generation e92 M3. You never know what can go wrong with first gen.

Hi,

The E92 M3 is promised to do (according to my BMW sources) less than 4.5 seconds 0-62mph accelleration time on the fastest SMG IV program (by upchanging gears without using the clutch at all!) It'll also beat M5 and M6 to 100mph. After that, the V10's might pull stronger (at least when getting to around 200mph)

I wonder who told you that the M6 is worse to handle than the M5. It's exactly the opposite. Even though it's almost as heavy, the M6 is definitely the better handler of the two, and of course, looks a lot better (in my opinion.) Having driven both for couple of days, I'd take the M6 over M5 any day. Lower center of gravity, etc. etc. And the 645 is long gone, been replaced by the 650i Coupé almost a year ago. But the M6 is definitely better looking of the two, and has extra features that you can't even dream of on the 650i (or buy them as options, such as full leather interior or active M seats.)

M GmbH has stated several times that the E92 M3 will be the premium M-model of the lineup (no wonder, with a 9000rpm engine) and basically a street version in the spirit of the legendary M3 GTR Racetrack monster, which was very light (around 1250kg/2700lbs) and had a firebreathing 4L V8 with over 500hp+, and won 10 American Le Mans (ALMS) races, with dual victories in 4 races and 10 pole positions back in 2001. The new M3 will be very close to 450hp if not over it, and torque will be on the same level. This is according to my sources at BMW. We'll know for sure around next March when the M3 is officially released (and demoed)

Best regards,

Jussi

Wow! Awesome info!

Glad to have you onboard to share all this info with us!
BTW, how did you come across all this info (eg. 9k redline, SMG IV, 4.5s 0-62mph)? Are you an auto-journalist?

Hi,

I have close connections with the local reseller and importer of BMW's over here, I test drive their cars and provide feedback to their sales and sometimes do photograph work at the same time. And luckily the reseller is the biggest in Scandinavia, so they do get some straight information from BMW AG directly.

Best regards,

Jussi

Please, buy the car because you like it, not because of some silly 0-100mph times. BMW has stated that the new M3 will be "the premium M car of the series", if you want to take that as an indicator of things to come. And let's face it, the M5/M6 are two years old models now, so of course the M3 will be quite a lot nicer and have the later gizmos at this point. And the high-rev V8 combined with substantially lower weight will definitely beat the not-as-high-rev-but-still-high-rev V10's in straight line accelleration. And because of the lower weight, the M3 will be the winner in the track, no questions asked.

But still, ask yourself what you need. If you want a family Sedan that can beat a Porsche, get the M5. If you want a large luxury Coupé with an incredible engine, get the M6. (And get the full leather interior - oh boy is it ever worth it. It's fabulous.)

Best regards,

Jussi

Be careful. The M cars are not toys. You can kill yourself easily with their power. You should really take BMW's M driver training class, unless you have long experience driving very high-performance vehicles. I really don't want you to become another statistic and a dead driver

Best regards, enjoy it and be safe,

Jussi

Sounds like somebody definitely needs a driving attitude adjustment. I've seen the actual wrecks and photos of them that easy money, immature kids or just general stupidity can generate with M cars or sometimes with just ordinary powerful BMWs, they sometimes haul the wreckages to the BMW repair shop. Not pretty. I have also been called to few accident investigations involving powerful BMWs or M BMWs to determine whether it was anything to do with the car or if it was just the driver. And I have also have had to nearly wreck a few E46 M3's on the track because of customer concerns (when the engine issue was new, back in 2002.) and it wasn't fun (had to push them as hard as I could with manual and SMG to try to cause the engine failure and find out which conditions would be more likely to cause it) even though I have over 12 years of track experience and more regular driving experience.

Best regards,

Jussi

The car is not that powerful??? 400-500hp/300-400 lb-ft is plenty powerful. People kill themselves with just "ordinary" 370hp/360lb-ft 650i's or even "less powerful" regular BMWs, such as the 330i which has "only" 258hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, by doing dangerous things in traffic with them, or on the track, for that matter. Fact of the matter is, if you're 19 years old, you will feel invulnerable. And there is no way you have enough experience to handle these cars, and the fact that you think you have, even makes you several times more dangerous, and by the fact that you're telling us they're "not powerful enough to worry about" sadly proves all of this. The only exception to the rule would be if you've driven WRC cars or similiar since around the age 12 as a serious hobby on a competition level, or some youth Formula class cars, again as a serious hobby, on the track, on competition level again, from the same age.

Best regards,

Jussi

No Fair! My comment to that Mgrady was stricken! But whatever, karma is an active, ungoverned law that rules all. The arrogance of his was continued above. Jussi was only giving him advice, and he immediately take a defensive and rude stance.

It's with the above kind of attitude we get the Enzo type crash pictures on the net (remember that one, what a criminal waste!), that guy was another millionaire bullshitter who had managed to con a leasing company into buying him an Enzo even though he couldn't afford it, then he crashed it in LA and tried to lie to the police that another guy was driving when it crashed... Then all of his bullshit fell apart around him.

All I can say, "bro" is that I've seen enough regular BMW and M wreckages to know there should be a mandatory course for people who buy these types of cars - not just BMWs, but Ferrari, Maserati, etc. Because the cars have kept getting more and more powerful, and with the change into Hydrogen power they will get even MORE powerful, has it has 2.5 times the BTU of gasoline with 130 octanes. Imagine what kind of power and torque numbers just a "regular" straight six can produce with that kind of juice?

People should better organize these courses voluntarily, before governments take action and make them mandatory, boring, pointless and stupid just like most driving tests for a driving license are in most countries of the world these days. Let the manufacturers who have the experience, such as BMW M division offer the courses, and sell the course as a mandatory part of the car unless you have a proven history of buying and having driven such cars before, is what I suggest. Otherwise government regulation will step in sooner or later, and I don't think anybody wants that.

Best regards,

Jussi
