Injen intake installation

I recently returned my AFE intake because it didn't fit in my e92 328i. These are the problems I was having with it. (can not link it directly, I'm posting from my phone. I will provide a real link when I get home)

I was wondering if I would have the same problem with an Injen intake? I was looking at some pictures of the heat shield and it looks like it would fit, but I am not sure. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I took out my AFE CAI.. Put the stock box for now and might go with the performance intake. Honestly, the ride is now much smoother, the car feels more responsive, and no more lag around 3k RPM. I'm done with the so called CAIs.

Performance intake was a decent upgrade. Powerband comes a bit smoother and the engine sounds better, but I was hard pressed to notice any 'real' changes. Fairly expensive upgrade, too. You won't notice anything in day to day driving, but high RPM's make a difference (Although I had the Perf exhaust put on at the same time)

That and I live in ATX, where its ridiculously hot.

Yeah. I just don't want to order the Injen and have to send it back like the AFE.

I have the injen intake but i bought it used and it wasn't really that expensive for me. The only difference I realized is that it sounded lounder and pulled a little harder at high rpm. Some people will tell you Injen will rub which is total BS because they installed it wrong.

Yeah but its at the cost of power in the lower rpm range. Both INJEN and AFE are sluggish when taking off. Also AFE lags on take off at around 3k rpm.

Just to clarify, aFe does make two intake systems for the N52 engines. Before any order is placed it should be specified whether your car came equipped with active steering or without as there are two different part numbers associated with the intake.

unless you're have nervous system better than the dyno, you can barely feel the difference. I've seen dyno of the afe intakes, not even dyno can tell the difference. It doesn't really change that much.

and intakes in general are not worth the money if you are paying over $300 IMO, however, some are willing to pay over that amount to have a nicer sounding engine.

IMO, BMW got it right with the stock intake (minus the charcoal filter). If you remove the charcoal filter it is a pretty free flowing system. When I had the box out, I put my shop vacs hose in one end and hovered my hand over the other opening; I must say there was a noticeable difference in air movement with that charcoal filter out. I also removed the tiny little resonator on the actual tube, which made it a bit louder.

Comparing to other stock intakes on my previous cars, this one is designed the best. And the paper filter isn't all that bad. My 2000 Acura TL had a ginormous intake resonator that was mounted in the bumper area, it was bigger than the damn intake box itself.

But like cbbplanet said, if you want a nicer sounding engine go for it.

I replaced the tube from the engine to the box with an smooth tube to get rid of the resonator box. Sound is a little deeper but not as noticable anymore. Afe's intake is a really expensive noise maker. If you want sound, just go ebay or injen. If you want power, don't mess with it.

I guess I should spend the money on an air filter and a muffler delete.

pretty much. im only getting an injen for the sound, since theres no way of making an n52 much faster without dropping at least 3-5g's

All that I have read on aftermarket intakes for this car is very discouraging. Does not sound like it is worth the cost. I just did a charcoal filter delete and intake silencer delete on my ride tonight. Only cost me $0.68 (plug for silencer hole) and should perform a little better. I am convinced the ONLY advantage over the stock intake that the AFE or Injen has is the fact that they don't have charcoal filters. Problem solved!

I had to modify my afe intake a little bit to get it to fit. Some type of sway bar thing was in the war of my filter housing. As seen in the OP's 2nd link.
After i modded it and installed it its been working great.
I will say that you do loose a little power on the low end and on your launch. But there is a slight noticeable power on the top end. (anything < 4k )
Although this is combined with scoops and the bms pbx.
For just around $300 it really isn't as bad as some of these guys make it out to be. The sound is enjoyable and the small noticeable gains in top end are nice to have.

How did you mod it?

I like my low end power. As much as I love the intake sound, I'd rather keep the grunt down low since we aren't really blessed with a great deal of it to start with.
