I just performed my own oil change via the posted DIY Instructions with OEM BMW parts.

1. I was just wonder what is the difference between the following?

A) Oil Filter with heat exchanger
B) Oil Filter without heat exchanger

2. FRAM "after market filters" without heat exchanger costs more than the one with heat exchanger.

3. Which one is the OEM BMW E90 filter? A) or B)

4. Which brand/model/part# do you guys use and or recommend?

I strongly recommend you purchase your filter from the dealer. The cost difference should be nominal. In any case some filter housings have a heat exchanger (my 335d does).

Visiting the dealer takes this guess work out of the equation.

I agree it ain't too much of a difference. But I was planning on changing the filter every 5000 KM and do full Oil Change and Filter every 10000km.

Anyone else know the answer?

So you're wasting money on unnecessary oil changing but saving money on the oil filters that you swap out twice as often.

Am I the only one who fails to see the sense in this?

Oh - wait - Jiffy lube told me to do 3k oil changes. What the hell do those German techs know anyway?

not sure what you are pointing out.. i change my oil and filter every 7,500 miles. no questions asked. good luck with your oil changes every 3,000. do you use conventional oil as well?

to directly answer your question, i always use Mann filters.

I think the issue here is looking at Fram filters in the first place. They don't have a good reputation, and for good reason. And this case shows it. There is no "heat exchanger" as part of the filter.

Best bet is to pick up the filters from the dealer of one of the online BMW parts suppliers.

I used FRAM as an example as they are "readily" available at the local retailers in my area.

I used BMW OEM as stated in original thread and was wondering if everyone else was doing the same. I did noticed that many don't like FRAM (bobstheoilguy forums).

Anyone have any experience with/opinions of the Purolator oil filter? I live 2 hours from the closest BMW dealership, and would love to hear that Mobil 1 0W-40 and Purolator filters work just as well as OEM....

M1 0w-40 is well liked (It's LL01 approved). I used it in both my and E90/E46 330's. As for filters I only use OEM, but I honestly don't believe there are significant differences between the majors.

I have never used the Purolator filter for the E90, however I do often use them on my other cars.

I would not hesitate to use a Purolator branded filter in an E90. For reasons that are going to seem weird in the automotive world, which is not where I am from, I cut my filters open during oil changes. I find the Purolators to be well made, unlike some other filters that I have used from time to time over the years.

in my boosted G35 i used fram filters because i was changing my oil every 3000 miles.

good filter for short term use.

What does a "heat exchanger" filter look like? OEM does not have a heat exchanger. I would use OEM if changing oil at 15,000 mile intervals otherwise I would use any oil filter.

FRAM FILTERS are garbage, google them, there are many tests done on youtube to show the quality difference between fram and everyone else, its very say that most stores over stock the crappy orange boxes!!

Sorry to tell you but its not true that only diesels have heat exchanger, my car is Euro E90 325i 2006 and it has it.

Not sure what the difference is between the two...all I wanted to point out was that Amazon sells Mann (OEM) filters for cheap. Just get whichever one fits your car from them.

I stick with OES (Original Equipment Supplier), but never from the dealer. You'll usually find that OES filters are made by Mann, Mahle, Hengst and perhaps one or two others. I seem to recall that Mann is what you usually get from a dealer, so I've been choosing Mann when given the choice. Check out places like AutohausAZ.
