Goodyear Run Flats?

I am taking delivery in USA in about two weeks on a 535xi. I know the xi has same Goodyear LS2 run flats tires as standard 535i without sport package, 245/45/18. I understand there is no trunk area for either a mini spare or a standard size tire. Is that true? If so my run flat choices in that size are limited.

How are the Goodyear LS2 Run Flats? Heard not so good on snow and ice?

Sadly, yes.

Can't report on snow and ice, but so far, for run-flats, they seem to be pretty good.

Personally, I'd prefer to have conventional tires and room for a proper full size spare LIKE WE USED TO GET WHEN WE'D BUY A $50,000 car!!!!!!!!!!!!

Run Flat Tire Thread life

I have a 2004 545i. The car came with Goodrich RFTs. They were very noisy and literally wore out after 5000 miles. I replaced them with Michelin non RFT tires and had no problem. I notice that the 2011 535i with the sport package comes with RFTs. Anybody out there have any indication of tire life? The RFTs (19") are like $350 each.

Hit a pothole the first day I got the car. I live in NYC. Busted the cords I think. Have a bubble on the side. Tire not flat though. I am still driving the car w/no problem. I dont plan to go to far anyway before I get the new tire. I purchased the rim/tire protection. BMW is going to put another tire on for me........no questions asked. My suggestion, get that rim/tire insurance!

I never, never ever get this aftermarket insurance crap. It's total profit for the dealer.

However, it seems that with the sport package and/or 19" wheels, the tires and wheels are rather fragile and if you live in a place (Northeast, for example) with lots of potholes, it may be a wise move to get the tire/rim insurance. You may go through two tires before it is to your advantage, but only one rim will make it worthwhile.

Down here in the sunny warm south, we have potholes too but they are rarely as deep and as large as you guys get up North, so I still don't bother with the insurance. But hey, I like living on the edge!
