320d worth waiting for half a year?

Finally BMW Phil has responded to my emails concerning special ordering a manual tranny 320d. The product person handling my request said that it could take up to 6 months for my order to be filled because they had to homoginized(?) or detune(?) it for our roads. So my question now is if you were in my place would you wait half a year?

The situation here is that BMW Phil is just offering in the steptronic tranny (no 6 speed manuals) of the 320i, 325i and 330i. The performance and fuel figures of the petrol version doesnt impress me much and I would rather have the diesel version.

??? Are the roads that bad? If that is the case, then the fuel figures for the Steptronic will probably be a lot worse than advertised..If you want to wait or not, It depends..Is there something you can scoot around in until then? What are your options?

It's a long time to wait. I guess they mean homologating (type approval for your country)

A 325i or 330i would be my choice in that situation. The 320d is excellent, but if it's going to be de-tuned then that devalues it's appeal to me.

Also from what I've read here, the 330i's economy seems pretty decent on normal driving, but Bozo's comment about the auto transmission sapping fuel economy is also a serious factor.

I'd forego the wait and take a good look at the 325i or 330i.

our roads are pretty bad and our diesel fuel is supposed to be equivalent to Euro I. I actually have a car already but want to get a 320d as soon as possible.

MarkA yeah I think he said homologate the 320d for our diesel fuel but I honestly see no problem seeming anyone can import any type of vehicle because of lack of govt regulations.

A limiting factor for me with getting the 325i and 330i is the sticker price and road and traffic conditions we have. Our roads arent good enough to support 200+kph speeds and traffic limits you to stop and go at an average of 20-40kph making a diesel the most ideal of choices.

Prices are in Euro converted from Phil Peso sticker price

Variant:
320i
Base = 33,500
Exec = 37,100
Sport = 40,000
Tech = 41,400
325i
Base = 50,500
Exec = 51,600
Sport = 55,000
Tech = 56,300
330i
Exec = 57,100
Sport = 60,000

Wow, I didn't realize bimmers are that expensive in the Philippines. I was there last year and a friend of mine picked me up in a new E46. He took me golfing about 50 kms. away from Manila... I would say one of the best rounds of golf I've ever played. Mango trees all over the place and a female caddy that actually knew her stuff.

I do remember the wicked speed bumps... not the best for the sports package.

Ciao,
Niko

That's why the 325i or 330i isnt an option.

For comparison's sake these are the E46 prices in Euros as of March 21, 2005
318i M Sport = 42,300
325i Edition = 50,100
325i M Sport = 51,600

Speed bumps causes more pollution and wasted fuel.

320d in manila

Pinoy, I'm also here in manila and pursuing an order for a 320d. The variants offered by BMW Philippines is too stock looking for me (manual aircon, no xenons, etc.). I've asked them to give me an estimate of the total costs for a 320d with the options I wanted. If the price seems reasonable, I'll be placing an order with them. They said that it should arrive in December.

Keep me posted on your order as well. Thanks.
