Intake without tune?
Just curious as to how safe it is to run an aftermarket intake eg. BMS DCI, without a tune. I plan on on doing a BMS DCI and JB+ combo, and I have the DCI on the way, but I want to do some cosmetic stuff before I buy the Jb+. I saw one person say that power is lost without a tune. Any truth to this?

Stock, you will certainly lose power at lower RPMs with a dual-cone intake and will not gain anything at high RPMs.
A better alternative for an upcoming JB+ would have been a drop-in filter like BMS or K&N (or Helene). |

I know in general, there isn't too much gain from intakes. I mainly wanted feedback on whether it would cause engine issues due to increased air in a force induced car. A month is probably the longest i would go before ordering the jb+, and the intake should be arriving tomorrow. Just wanted to cover all bases in case I get antsy and wanna hear a little "intake music" before I tune her.

you car will run perfect! Just do it!!! Its like drinking from a coffee straw and then drinking from a McDonalds straw!!! More air and least resistance is better for performance and fuel efficiency.

yeah, Your main concern is heat soak (NOT) coming from one sid of the engine accross a hot radiator and behind our hot engine and going to a 400-500 turbo... its all about more air. The more air the turbo can get the better.

Enclosed intake (Dinan / GruppeM) will provide gains without a tune.
Open intakes is more of an IAT vs airflow question. With a tune, DCIs will give you more.

i would use the scoops with stock airbox and a drop in, the air is being forced into the intake and into the turbo's, instead of just in the engine compartment.

I see what you guys are saying. Apart from the added performance without a tune, the sound factor will be non-existent, and I do want the sound. I will have the tune by next month so I will just stick with the DCI. |

If heatsoak is a concern I would definitely recommend for you to check out the aFe dual filter cold air intake for your 335i. An aFe dual filter cold air intake system for your 335 is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to increase your car's performance. The cold air intake replaces your restrictive factory air box which allows for an increased air flow meaning more horsepower. Another feature of the intake is the 16 gauge powder coated steel heat shield. A heat shield makes sure that the intake doesn't use the hot air around your engine and only allows the intake to receive cooler air, which adds more power. This is a feature that many other open or exposed cold air intake systems out there in the market do not have. I'll shoot you over a PM with more details!
