hp claimed

OK what will the claimed (brochure) hp number be for the new M3? Of course I mean at the crank not wheels. I should also specify the EU brochure. Keep in mind BMW has underated the 335i and M5 but may or may not for the new M3.

OK I'll bite - Euro brochure will say 415, NA 410

Sorry about adding the EU clarification after you voted. Now your message and vote do not match. I knew I should specify the poll really clearly but temporarily forgot about the normal EU-US differences.

Well, I am basing myself on the assumption that the new M3 will have around 430 Bhp in Europe (no NA emission thingies). So BMW will claim in Europe I think 415, perhaps 420.

IN NA because of the different emission regs the Bhps are less......

425 bhp for me.

I thought that all manufacturers now measure horspower at the brakes; bhp (brake horsepower)? Granted it is not actual power being applied to the ground but more accurate than crank measurements and less vunerable to dyno manipulation.

I still reckon we'll see some light turbocharging in the new m3 so I'm guessing 450 bhp on the button!

Horsepower terms are a bit confusing and subject to many different standards. Although the true hp of an engine is entirely independent of test equipment and process the actual measured values are not. bhp is brake horsepower as measured using a brake system (brake dyno) on the engine driveshaft (not the cars brakes). Any measurement that included any drivetrain components would further complicate testing and would always report lower power numbers from parasitic drivetrain losses. Sometimes auxiliary hp robing equipment such as alternator or water pump is can be left out of the measurement process (getting you a higher number). In the US we (often) use SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards to test hp. We call it hp rather than bhp although it is measured by a brake dyno as well. The old SAE standard was from 1971, the newest one from SAE is called J2723 and specifies precise test conditions to eliminate any advantages or variability in the test (http://www.sae.org/certifiedpower/). PS figures only further complicates the matter. This German unit of power is lawfully not supposed to be used anymore but you still hear it a lot from Europe. Their new official power unit is kW (kilowatt, the metric MKS standard). PS and kw are defined exaclty by:

1 PS = 0.73549875 kW = 0.9863201652997627 hp (SAE)

Also hp numners differ from EU to US (models) because the engines and cars are actually equiped differently and do produce a different amount of power. Hope this helps.

turbo weed sounds good!

Seriously though - why not??? I know it has been off the radar for M division up until now but, if BMW are showing such promise with the turbocharging in the 335 and have other turbo engines in the pipeline it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that the M3 will have the same treatment. I tried to push Jussi on the issue (chap seems to have a lot of inside info) and he pretty much declined to comment on the FI issue as he had signed a NDA with BMW.

I think we should all keep an open mind!

Turbo weed still sounds good though... got any?

Best regards, south

Since there is no official info published by BMW yet, EVERYTHING is speculation. There's no need to call any other's members predictions as any less valid than others; posts removed.

Where is swamp? Price close to RS4 means that we will start the bidding at $65K for stripped car. So upgrading to a descent radio will probally cost $70K and so on. Oh shit ...

This sucker gonna be expensive, get ready to pay my friends

(I wonder if they'll charge $1K for the mats.)

Good point. Just kidding about the weed.

Anyway, I'd rather have a NA engine.

Cmon now...base price CAN'T be $65,000.
Loaded one will most likely be $75,000 or even $80,000
