That guy probably had a "two step". It is a module that can be preset to stop rpm increase at the chosen RPM hence the firecracker sound. When set up for the launch in a manual car, you floor the gas pedal and it will hit that pre-programmed limiter until you pop the clutch. This helps to make almost perfect launches every time. All the fire and gun shot noise was just because of his exhaust and modifications. Its all pretty much like the bmw " launch control" feature.

Had this on my sti, simple way of explaining is through timing adjustment it allows raw fuel past your valves and ignites to keep your turbo spooling in between shifts. It's very hard on your turbo and with full boost shifts your drivetrain won't agree with it.

mostly used on rally cars, it pretty much spins your turbo at full psi when on. so you at full boost at launch and upshifts. turbo life expectancy can shorten up to 50%

If my car sounded like that, i would be ashamed to call it a BMW.

Anti-lag setup's are very hard on the engine and turbo since it's basically causing the car to run rich and retarding the engine timing to get the turbo to spool up.
I'd rather live without it than have my engine/turbo life shortened because of it. There is one system that feeds air to the exhaust manifold so you aren't heating up the engine badly each time but it would take custom work for the bmw to have it. |

Nah, its an important topic that's starting to get more and more popular with the new S55's antilag system.. look it up..

There's a reason why antilag launch isn't something that people have invested a lot of time into on this platform (rolling or launch).

For me I am interested more in launch control I have an E93 M3 getting supercharged soon. But since they are similar I am interested in both systems and figured I would revive the topic.

Regarding the N54, it simply isn't required or useful on stock turbos. FBO stock turbo cars spool ridiculously fast and tend to blow the tires off the car, faster response is the last thing it needs to get out of the hole. Issue with N54 powered cars and good ETs is the chassis, not the motor or the turbos. I could see the value on a single turbo car, but you're looking at a really small market. JB4 has a two step for stationary anti-lag but you don't see it get much use due to the aforementioned reasons. Rolling anti-lag would be awesome for sure, that's something i'd love to see. Problem is you aren't likely to find that until you completely ditch the factory DME. Running a motec or syvecs gets expensive The anti-lag on the S55 is a cool gadget, but is also likely unnecessary. It too spools very quickly. The new M cars have tons of features, the vast majority of which are completely useless if we're talking performance.
