engine detune

i know this sounds weird but is there a ecu program that will detune a 330i so it can run 87 octane? i drive 140 miles a day and gas price suck and i dont want to buy a honda civic or something, so if anyone knows anything if it can be done please let me know. and once again try not to rag on me to hard.

Uhh, octane ratings do not work that way...... The engine will retard the timing if you use a lower octane (through detection of knock). As far as running 87 octane vs. 91, well, honestly, you would probably get away with it. Your car has absolutely NO idea what octane you put in it.

our dealer told us this once when there was a lack of 93/91 fuel for a few days. He said the engine will accept the 87 and just adjust to it. you will get less performance, and i actually saw no change in mileage.

using 87 that one time, I got about 300 miles
using 91 all the time, I get about 330 miles

same commute everyday

you can run 87 octane stock, but as others have stated you do get better mileage on 91, so its a trade off.

the lexus es350 has always taken 93 and had 272hp(later year models). the 2011 es350 now takes 87 and has 268hp. thats why i was curious about a ecu program or something. the lexus only lost a couple of hps. our engines might be different and have way high compression and this could not be done. ohh and im not jerking yall around i drive 40,000 miles a year so any fuel cost cutting would be great and we drive entry model sedans not zr1's or 7 series so just because its a bmw doesnt matter. everyone else i appreciate the info!

We have octane adaptation in our cars...the car doesn't know the octane rating but it knows how 91 octane runs. It adjusts the timing and such so the car doesn't knock, misfire etc

In sense it does know what octane you put in.
