I was told by the dealer to press the button once (can never remember what that setting is called), so in effect you get a bit of slip to allow you to pull away, but there is still a bit of protection to stop you going totally sideways!

Yes, I think that is the one to go for. DTC it's called.
I'm just reading through this http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...light=dsc+snow. I had it all switched off yesterday but it's getting really bad and this is my first year in the white stuff with RWD so I think I'll feel a little safer with the DTC on. But I like the warning that says no amount of driver aides can overcome the laws of physics. Drive within your limits. I need to go somewhere safe and learn the car in the snow.

Have you got that wrong way round?
DSC is default full nanny. DTC is one push, allows spin. I can see where the confusion comes in.

I wouldn't recommend driving round with the DTC enabled all the time - you CAN get it sideways enough to smack the kerb.
If you feel it holding back the power with DTC disabled, then turn in on. Or at least turn it on as you approach a hill or whatever, then turn it off afterwards.

DTC in action. Was parked on snow-covered cobbles. Couldn't pull away as traction control kept cutting power the second I gave any throttle at all in 2nd. Pressed DTC, and off it went first time.

I was Told by BMW to keep the system fully on until you get stuck, and only then press the button once to allow you to put power down

A word of caution about stability control and traction control, especially in front drive cars.
Last year I got the R26 nicely slideways coming into my home area, on the snow. Not a problem normally - with front wheel drive as you apply a little oppo and power the front out, just like lift-off oversteer. But with 'DTC' or whatever brand you have, that was impossible as the throttle gets cut Cost me over a grand and a days work, for a front toe rod and a rear beam as the welded in stub-axle got bent. The rear alloy buckled as it whacked a high kerb at all of 15mph, and yanked the front onto it also. I now take driver aids off and use my own ability in marginal conditions, its far safer. As above its easy to clip a kerb, and the 'FREDS' might actually work against you. Even ABS is a PITA in snow and I wish it was easier to yank the fuse out.
