Idrive

BMW website says you can get on the Internet proper using the sat nav. Is this true? If so how?

You need the latest & greatest version of iDrive to this.
It's the one with the HDD, not DVD.

I think it might only be on late 2010 onwards models as it's quite difficult to work out exactly when these improvements become standard.

He's saying he's not sure when HDD became standard - no sign of comparing the two.

Just the HDD nav isn't enough. They only put internet in in late 2010.

On the BMW ConnectedDrive site it states "The range of Connected Navigation functions in the latest generation of vehicles has been considerably expanded. The new features apply from September or October 2010 vehicle production, depending on the model."

You might find this thread offers more info click here

Hope this helps

The manual for all HDD cars (inc my March 09 car) says you can get on the internet proper, but of course BMW UK didn't want to allow operation of this facility on UK cars, so we never got it here.

On EU cars it works.

Ok I see, although not "internet proper" you can get internet such as BMW online.

yep, along with google search, news and weather features.

I think though, that the later models get the fully featured internet like our cars 'should' have had IMO!! This allows full web screens to be displayed although I am not sure how the navigation around these screens would work in real life using an i-drive controller?

But the google search is only to search business addresses / numbers for the purposes of navigating there or calling them.

I find it quicker to call the assist number and ask them rather than wait ages for the online thingy to work - no to mention the risk of crashing due to fiddling with your knob (idrive one of course)

Is this online stuff just through a standard GSM link in the car - surely its very slow?

Would have been cool 10 years ago, but since they invented the 3G iphone (& clones) doesn't this render idrive based surfing a bit pants?

I thought I read somewhere that 'full' interent was Germany only. Mine is a September 2010 and i have the limited set up. The manual talks about full internet but has a caveat along the lines of 'in certain markets.
